Stuck in "Update_Core" status: Failed reading core package h

Post by tgwowgt »

I have a problem that stops me.
Ubuntu 19.04 machine, fresh installation, without firewall and with direct internet access.
The client is locked in "Update_Core" status.
Reading the log, i try download the files with wget without problems and without strange behaviors like redirections.
I read all the post related with "Failed reading core package header." tring all the workaround in these days without solution.
Someone can suggest me something? I really appreciate every suggestion...

Can you manually open http://cores.foldingathome.org/v7/lin/6 ... ore_a7.fah in your browser? It should download the FAHCore file, or does it error immediately?
F@h is now the top computing platform on the planet and nothing unites people like a dedicated fight against a common enemy. This virus affects all of us. Lets end it together.

Download the cores manually and put them in the directory the old fashioned way and that might mitigate the problem for now. Long term you will have to work out why it isnt downloadinng it.

Also check the perms on the folding directories. if you have somehow run it as root initially, it will lock all the files and directories out. You can use 'chown' to change ownership to the correct user.

Code: Select all

chown user.group -R /path/to/fah
Perms should be rwxrwx (0770) or rwx-- (0700). Owner and Group can read, write, execute or just Owner, depending on how you set it up.

Code: Select all

chmod 0770 -R /path/to/fah

I am told the downloaded .fah file is a tarball, you can verify that if want to try that route. But getting the path and permissions right can be a pain as mentioned above.

As I Say, i can download the files from browser or via wget without problems. Then I can Place its in the right directory manually but which Is that path? Moreover all the directory in /var/lib/fahvlient are already 777 in order to avoid every double but not solve. I have tryed also placing a local http server and redirect to it via entry in hosts file, again no change. I can't understand where is the problem and of or Is really outside the fahclient... PS:I'm writing from Cell with corrector in Italian, sorry for mistakes

wget and browser work without problems.

Yes I see, and in effect the problem is really where to put the files, but I figure that is more complicated then that becose looking for successfully downloaded core files log in the forum I see that the application don't look for it and have to parse the new files before use.

I don't know where I have to put files, but rights are already 777:

When you installed, did you accept the default locations (and did that work) or did you decide to move things somewhere else?

All standard.
I see file in /varlib/fahclient and a dir, .FAHClient/ in home

The path would look similar to this for Core A7.

Code: Select all

/var/lib/fahclient/cores/cores.foldingathome.org/v7/lin/64bit/avx/Core_a7.fah$ ls -l
total 19436
-rwxr-xr-x 1 fahclient root 19877008 Nov 6 08:21 FahCore_a7

Thanks! I go to try, in the meanwhile...
I'm trying to understand.
I run a local http server with:

sudo python2 -m SimpleHTTPServer 80

and redierect to it via entry in /etc/hosts, placing the files in the correct path ../v7/...bla bla

Now if I run:
wget http://cores.foldingathome.org/v7/lin/64bit/Core_21.fah

in the server I see:

Serving HTTP on 0.0.0.0 port 80 ...
127.0.0.1 - - [21/Mar/2020 21:00:57] "GET /v7/lin/64bit/Core_21.fah HTTP/1.1" 200 -

BUT if I leave the fahclient do the same, this is the server log:

127.0.0.1 - - [21/Mar/2020 21:03:03] code 404, message File not found
127.0.0.1 - - [21/Mar/2020 21:03:03] "GET http://cores.foldingathome.org/v7/lin/64bit/Core_21.fah HTTP/1.0" 404 -

WHY the path start with the URL http....???

I wouldnt even bother complicating matters. Just grab the cores you need, untar them and put them in the cores directory they should be in. That way you can get folding.

When you have everything working, then start debugging the problem by copying FAHClient to a new directory and running it from there with a basic config.xml setup for a single cpu client, until you work out why it wont download the cores correctly. Once you fix it, then the main client should also be fixed.

No way to untar the .fah file

$ tar xf Core_a7.fah
tar: This does not look like a tar archive
tar: Skipping to next header
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors

$tar xzf Core_a7.fah
gzip: stdin: not in gzip format
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

tar xjf Core_a7.fah
bzip2: (stdin) is not a bzip2 file.
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

Also using 7zip or winrar or others program.

SOLVED

The untar way is a mess, it's impossible in my opinion obtain something.

The solution come downloading the core files with wget or whatever you want and install a HTTP server in your machine.
I start with SimpleHttpServer but the request maded by fahClient is unsupported, may be because in HTTP/1.0 I think for proxy compliance.
Tryng with NodeJs http-server I have success.
Simply reconstruct the path
/v7/lin/64bit/avx/
inside a directory, cd to it and here launch the server.
Insert in /etc/hosts file an entry like
127.0.0.1 cores.foldingathome.org
and now the client can download the files!

I hope this helps, but I think that the fahclient made the request in a measleading way

It probably did. Its anyones guiess if things comply with http standards or shortcuts were taken since the code is proprietary.

As long as you got it working. But you will have to repeat this each time it gets updated, unless you can debug the problem. But for now you are up and running, and in the end thats all that matters.
