All diseases have to wait for Corona.
Seems like F@H put COVID-19 in high priority to high that it won't get other diseases when there is no more new COVID-19 to get work from and my computer just waits on and off to not have my computer just sit there and does nothing.
I really don't think adding new servers that are the problem.
Am I wrong here?

Re: All diseases have to wait for Corona.
Both are true.
COVAID-19 does have priority, but when we have so many people trying to get work that the servers experience a Denial of Servce attack, nothing can be assigned.
I think they're finally beginning to get a handle on the total demand vs. the total ability to distribute and retrieve work .... but I certainly wouldn't call it a "solved" issue yet.

This is not entirely true. COVID-19 work does have the highest priority, but you will get other work when there are no COVID work units - I just got a 14310 WU an hour ago (a cancer one). Problem is, there are so many new folders on the project now that the work servers are either getting completely drained or, as Bruce said, nobody can get through. I have one GPU sitting idle right now - it's being told no WUs available.Sandman192 wrote:Seems like F@H put COVID-19 in high priority to high that it won't get other diseases when there is no more new COVID-19 to get work from

Re: All diseases have to wait for Corona.
I have not had ALL my PCs folding since Thursday, the 8 to 1 growth in volunteers really has stresses the server infrastructure.
I do feel it is better this evening, at one point Monday i had 1 CPU actually folding out of 8 PCs.
Now a dirty secret: It checks for work less and less often as it sits idle, so reboot and there is a better chance it will find work.

Re: All diseases have to wait for Corona.
I've been getting cancer WUs both yesterday and today, and at a pretty consistent pace, too.
I suppose they've sorted out the servers and are "filling in the blanks" between COVID units with other units.

Re: All diseases have to wait for Corona.
I'm getting different projects from SARS-CoV-2 as well.
I understand that it's helpful to do work on other projects as well but some of us are prioritizing corona work against doing our normal work/other things with our computers.
I hope it doesn't sound bad but I'd rather do corona work or use my computer for other needs at this moment. For me corona has priority over other work I'd do on the computer.
This project keeps getting visibility more and more and I think we should have a good way to get info from devs that are dealing with this situation.
This means that more and more computers are going to ask for WU and the way this is handled right now is not feasible from now on, communication wise. If people don't receive coronavirus WU they are going to go about their business.

Re: All diseases have to wait for Corona.
It has been said many times that COVID-19 work units have the highest priority (when you choose any under cause preference). When your system is looking for a WU, it will get a corona project if available.decebal wrote:I'm getting different projects from SARS-CoV-2 as well.

Re: All diseases have to wait for Corona.
I did not get any WU for corona today, but got for other projects.
Also curious of another detail if someone can answer this: how would we know if the mystery has been cracked? Does the folding@home team find out instantly? Is it a longer process as in they have to sift through all of the resolved WU. If the team sees it's been resolved, do they announce this immediately?
How long will it take between the time the correct folding is found and the time the info is made public for research labs to work on a cure of sorts? Interested on the steps from your end.
Thank you

Re: All diseases have to wait for Corona.
Not quite that simple. Results are found, papers are written, drug companies and pretty much anyone can then use that info to create better targeted drugs. It isnt a Eureka thing for the most part. This process isnt some instant thing. With all likelihood this will go on for a good long time, maybe a couple of months or longer. When new things are discovered they may create new projects to try out different ideas based on what they discovered in the first projects. Ultimately all of that knowledge will then be published. But timelines wise, a year or so is a good estimate. COVID-19 will probably be around and killing people for a good couple of years. Even after a vaccine or treatment is created, there is nothing stopping the virus from mutating which might require new research, a new vaccine, maybe more quarantine. It may be something added to the yearly flu jab.decebal wrote:I did not get any WU for corona today, but got for other projects.

As for making public, the researchers are putting online the results, both positive and negative, so persons researching elsewhere can compare notes, etc. They may publish later, but for this they are not waiting for that, and are sharing the data they have and will get as soon as possible.

While what you are saying is true, everything revolving the corona virus is an exception. You can find a bunch of info about their research on their github page:v00d00 wrote:Not quite that simple.
