GPu ready but not working

Post by tomplayer07 »

Hi everyone! New to the site. I downloaded and installed the software on my pc but the gpu is not working. Here are my specs: i5 4440-r9 280-8 gb ram. I know it is not very powerful but in the next few months I will upgrade it with a r5 3600 and a rx 5700 xt. Thank you for the support.

Hi, and welcome! Not many gpu work units are available right now due to all the new donors, but the team is working on it.

There's been an overwhelming flood of newcomers to Folding@home due to the high interest in helping out with the WuFlu research. This has led to a complete exhaustion of the available workunits in the queue, so sometimes your software might wait for a bit while its looking for more work. This situation should improve soon as the research groups are deploying new high-capacity servers and getting new projects into the queue. So I'd recommend just leaving everything there and it should fully engage relatively soon.
F@h is now the top computing platform on the planet and nothing unites people like a dedicated fight against a common enemy. This virus affects all of us. Lets end it together.

When FAH is installed and set to FULL, it will generally attempt to run one WU assignment on your i5 CPU and another on your R9 280 GPU. As has been stated above, you may have significant gaps in the productivity of your system due to the current server limitations.

Started folding yesterday. The default startup settings were for a single CPU slot. It took about 15 ours to get my first WU.

When I saw that up and running, I added a slot for my GPU (Radeon HD 8800M series, according to the FAH client, AMD Radeon R9 M370X according to the system info on my computer), accepting the defaults for that. It has never been assigned a WU. However, in the mean time, my CPU lot finished one WU, was assigned and started another, and is almost done with that.

From reading the above, I'm guessing there are just not enough GPU WUs available at present? Is there any way to check that my client is setup correctly so that it will load at GPU WU when one is ready?

If you could post the first 200 or so lines of your log using the directions in the signature of Bruce's post, that would give us info about your system and its configuration to check over.

:( Oh, you didn't mention that you were running MacOS and I' didn't guess that. Unfortunately GPU folding is not supported on the Mac. The configuration created by original install was correct: You have a CPU slot. Manually adding a GPU was a useless step.

OK. Thanks. Guess I'll turn that one off. (I added my system info to my profile. Thought I had mentioned it in my previous post, but I see now that I did not.)

Hi there - I've installed the software (yesterday) and have been waiting all day to see if a work unit appears: I don't understand any of the technical stuff but this is a fairly new Lenovo laptop. Is it just (as they say on the telephone helplines) "we are experiencing a high volume of calls, please hold"?

Yes, it's quite likely that you got everything set up correctly, but there are just so many new users that there's not enough work available for everyone at this moment. The research teams are getting more projects into the queue and setting up more servers so hopefully that resolves itself soon.
F@h is now the top computing platform on the planet and nothing unites people like a dedicated fight against a common enemy. This virus affects all of us. Lets end it together.

Thanks - I guess (like the rest of life) I just have to be patient!

Do you know if there are plans to add support for GPU folding on the Mac in the future? If so, how can I be sure to hear about it, and will I need to do anything special to get it to start happening?

If you don't get an answer to this at the moment it might be worth asking it again once the current surge/overload of issues is managed - think at the moment most resource is focused on keeping stuff going for today/tomorrow and maybe the next week or so ... There may be discussions on this in previous thread that might enlighten you - feel free to root around with the search tool ... One of the Mods or Site Admins may get a chance to give you an answer if they get a chance.

As I understand it, there currently are no plans to reopen the development of a folding core for the macOS. The F@h team may reevaluate that at some point in the future as the Apple hardware and software changes. That would be if they saw expending some part of the limited software development resources on that would get them more science than using it on another resource.
