Folding for days, nothing happens

Post by saeid »

Hello, everyone,

Greetings from Iran.

First of all, I apologize if this is a repeated question. Any help is appreciated.

I have been folding for two straight days. I set the power to full, and, at first, it said something like, “My computer has 3.9 days to complete this work unit.” However, the CPU and GPU bars remained at 0%. Now, after two days, nothing new has happened, except my computer has 1.9 days to complete this work unit. I wonder why there is no progress. Please see the screenshot below.

My question is, has my computer actually done anything in terms of WU? If not, is it because of all the new users pouring in? I mean, I also found out about the project through NVIDIA. Anyhow, is there anything I can do to help at this moment?

Thank you, and have a wonderful day.

Try looking in the advanced Control. I suspect the Web Control is not reporting correctly. Information about this is being added to the FAQ on the Forum, I think.

Are you seeing CPU or GPU utilization? This should be evident via tools like GPU-Z or by fan noise. That can help us determine whether this is just a display issue or if nothing is actually happening.

Also, please note that there has been a massive flood of new users to F@h which has temporarily exhausted all of the workunits in the queue. The teams are currently setting up new servers and deploying new projects (including COVID-19) to keep up with demand. viewtopic.php?f=61&t=32424

If folding still is Paused, it is possible Web Control is not working properly. Try resuming processing using the advanced control- FAHControl.

You can also post your log file to help in further troubleshooting. There are directions on how to find and post in the Welcome topic for the various OS's. We are interested in the first 200 or so line that show your system information and folding configuration and if there is a section that shows some errors with processing a WU include that. We do not need the whole log.

Thank you all for your replies. I will try and respond to all of your messages.

After I uploaded the screenshot, I noticed that I had paused both slots at that moment, just to see if pausing and resuming would work. It didn’t.

When I was “folding,” there were no changes in the CPU or GPU, which was very strange. I did check the logs to see what was going on, and I noticed that there was a failure in connection. Somewhere on the forum, I remember seeing someone mention the assignments not being properly downloaded, so this was my first clue. Later today, when I wanted to visit the forum again to check if anyone replied to the topic, I noticed I couldn’t open the link—thus, my second clue. Naturally, I enabled the VPN, and everything was working well again. This time, when I launched the app, I was able to actually do the assignment.

So, here is my assumption. I am thinking that the F@h servers are blocked by the Iranian ISPs, so users can’t get through unless they are using a proxy or VPN to change their IPs. That is why I wasn’t able to download the assignment. What are your thoughts, guys?

If this is the case, then you guys need to inform people about it in the FAQ—something along the lines of “if not able to proceed, try using a proxy or VPN.”

Well, don't know about Iranian ISPs but restriction this kind is from my point of view really hard. If everything is working for you on VPN, better than nothing.

I am not sure either. At this point, it is just a hypothesis. Obviously, the restrictions can’t be lifted, but the website can point out this issue.

I was able to do a couple of runs yesterday, but today I can’t. Here are the most recent entries in the logs:

20:22:29:WARNING:WU00:FS00: Failed to get assignment from '18.218.241.186:80': No WUs available for this configuration
20:22:29:ERROR:WU00:FS00:Exception: Could not get an assignment
20:25:05:WU00:FS00:Connecting to 65.254.110.245:8080
20:25:06:WARNING:WU00:FS00: Failed to get assignment from '65.254.110.245:8080': No WUs available for this configuration
20:25:06:WU00:FS00:Connecting to 18.218.241.186:80
20:25:07:WARNING:WU00:FS00: Failed to get assignment from '18.218.241.186:80': No WUs available for this configuration
20:25:07:ERROR:WU00:FS00:Exception: Could not get an assignment

I even tried using a VPN (to get past the restrictions, if there are any)—no luck.

I have uploaded the full logs to Dropbox. You can view it here. Let me know what you think.

This is a common error at the moment due to all the new users joining Folding@home. It essentially states that there are no workunits available for you at the moment. In the meantime, keep everything running and it should pick up workunits when they are available. I'm seeing this same error myself put pick up workunits occasionally. Once they get more servers online and more workunits in the queue, that should get resolved.

Yes, I kind of figured. Thank you for explaining. I actually picked up a work unit just now.
