F@H started crashing daily on Windows 7 in recent months

I have been running the F@H client on Win7 for a year or more, iirc, but just within the past month or so it has started crashing multiple times per day. Before that it ran without error for months and months.

I see the Windows EventLogs for the crashes, and I have the F@H log as well. I'll include both here. Tell me if there is more information I can provide.

This sounds like a corrupted checkpoint ... let's try to eliminate this hypothesis first :

- pause your CPU slot (or exit the client)
- go to C:\Users\ric\AppData\Roaming\FAHClient\work
- delete 01 folder
- resume slot (or restart the client)

Does it help to get rid of the errors ?

Thanks - carried out those instructions. I'll have to wait and see if crash re-occurs now. Will report back here if it does.

If it's working fine after deleting the failing WU, I suggest that you stop using the "fold only when idle" option : using this option starts and stop the processing very often and increases the risk of corrupting a checkpoint.

I also suggest to exit the client manually (right click on icon> exit) before turning off or restating the machine.

0xc0000417 and the ERROR:Guru Meditation message indicate that your filesystem was corrupted. FAH discards the offending WU and downloads a new one so a validiation of the entire disk is probably not neede ... though that's up to you.

I have a theory this problem can be caused by FAHCore_a7, depending on what it was actually doing when you shut down/rebooted Windows. Until a new version of FAHCore_a7 is provided, it's fairly simple to follow toTOW's advice and pause the WU or otherwise exit FAH befoe restarting the machine. This will close the files properly.

Thanks toTOW and bruce. So it hasn't crashed since I deleted the "01" folder, but computer was off in the morning -- weekdays will be a better test.

I just switched from on-idle to always-on. This disk (an SSD) is a bit low on space, fwiw: 30gb free out of 500gb. I don't think I'll validate the entire disk at this point.

I'll include the current log, in case that's of any interest. Anyway, so far, so good.

Yes, WU = Work Unit and each WU is uniquely identified by 4 numbers PRCG which stands for Project/Run/Clone/Gen.

The log looks normal for an Intel i5 with no supported GPU.

Depending on the cooling capability of your system (is it a laptop?) you can adjust the number of threads allocated to folding to 1 or 2 or 3 or 4. FAHCore_a7 runs at a very low priority so I doubt you'll see any foreground performance degradation no matter what you choose. Everything you'd want to use your computer for would take priority, very briefly interrupting the folding calculations. That's a lot better than the "idle" setting.
