Error Message Re: OpenCL.dll

Post by James_Lang »

Hello! I just downloaded and successfully installed the latest client (7.4.4). However, when it runs, I continuously get a pop up that says: "FahCore_21.exe - System Error...The program can't start because OpenCL.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."

I tried running AMD Clean Unistall Utility (after reading a similar post and solution on this forum) and restarted my computer, but no dice.

I am using a NVIDIA GTX 650ti if that matters. I established my FAH account 4 years ago, however it's been years since I've done anything with it. I hope you guys can help me get up and running.

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Welcome James.

You haven't said how you installed your GPU driver or what operating system you're using but if you go to http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us and fill in the required information you will be able to download a driver that contains the needed opencl.dll. How you install those drivers depends on your operating system. Since you're using AMD's DDU I'll assume Windows in which case you simply double-click the installer. If you don't need or want some of the extras that come with the driver select the Custom install and remove the check next to anything you don't want. The driver is the only part that is actually required and usually it's check can't be removed. There's also a box next to "Perform a clean install" that I always check too.

Are you trying to use AMD's drivers on a NVidia GPU :?:

I had the same problem after doing the november update for windows 10, seems it somehow removed, moved or did whatever to that file. reinstalling the Nvidia drivers fixed it for me.

My current theory (yet to be proven) is that when Microsoft installs new drivers, it removes OpenCL (and CUDA) without telling you it did it and doesn't restore it. Installing the drivers from AMD or NV (depending on your GPU) will give you the option to install those extras (default=yes) ... ones that I consider essential parts of their drivers.

I haven't yet recorded a complaint against Windows Update but it's on my list. You may choose to do the same.

I've seen others have the OpenCL.dll error after letting Windows update drivers. I never let MS do that.

Just got the same error when my system rebooted after install of the Microsoft Windows 10 Anniversary update today.

I'll reinstall the Nvidia drivers to get me back online.

[UPDATE EDIT] Just installed 368.81 drivers and rebooted. FAH Core 21 came right up and started folding. So, obviously, Microsoft did something to delete the installed Opencll.dll software while updating.

No info yet on efficiency of either the Windows 10 update or 368.81, but I am watching out.

I am having the same problem, i followed the instructions to reinstalling/updating my graphics drivers. It all works, I stop getting the error, but after about 30-40 seconds of running, my entire system shuts down. I don't know if it is relevant, but this exact same thing happened when I went to play the demo for Doom, it would get through the credits, start to show the launch screen, then BAM shutdown.

Hello white_nrdy, welcome to the Folding Support forum.

The newest 37x.xx driver from NV doesn't seem to work well with folding. Reinstall a 36x.xx driver and see if that works better for you.

OK, thank you. I will try that. I know that this isn't the forum to post about this, but could driver version problem be the same reason that doom crashed my system (I tried 4 times)
