Just installed the client on my new dual CPU workstation. Two GPU clients started up fine, but the CPU slot just shows 'ready'

Any ideas on why the CPU slot won't work?

Too little information to say for sure, but the most likely reason is a default setting resulting in an CPU thread count that will not get assignments. Currently the servers will assign to counts that are multiples of 2 and/or 3 and sometimes 5. Most other multiples of primes greater than 5 are excluded. For very large core counts the number may need to be reduced, and possibly more than one CPU slot be defined to use all CPU cores available.

If you post the first 100 or so lines of your log file that shows system and client setup information using the directions in the Welcome topic, we can give more specific recommendations.

Figured it out...I needed to define the number of threads... 2 less than the max. works now!

We'd still like to see the (older?) log showing the failure, in case somebody else runs into the same problem.

I got mine to work again by deleting the CPU slot and making a new one, the only issue now is that under "Full" my PC is lagging really hard currently- the text I am typing is actually experiencing a delay. This never happened before, even running at full?

My CPU does not fold due to a down server. Not a big deal for me I will just use my GPU. It keeps trying the same server over and over hopefully it helps though.

How many CPU threads are you requesting WU's for BIG_RED? Unless your system has a very large number, or just one CPU thread, then there is CPU work. The two servers shown in the very brief section of log are Assignment Servers, they are just indicating there is no match to a WS at your current CPU setting. As I wrote in my response above, currently the number of CPU threads requested needs to be a multiple of 2, 3 and/or 5. Multiples of other larger primes are not currently available, and likely will not be in the future.

I don't have anything telling it how many threads it request in the logs I left those settings on default. The settings I have now worked last time I tried to run the client when it was cold.

Configure Expert only has pause-on-start true, open-web-control true, and client-type advanced.

System Info has CPUs 12

When I go to the Configure folding slot it has -1 which is "-1 let the client choose"

Change the number of CPUs slots to 12 in Configure folding slot to 12 and it worked. Not sure if this is a change in what the defaults need to be or what but the "-1 lets the client choose" is still there.

You didn't include the first part of the log (or the information from the System Info tab) so I have to assume your GPU slot is functional. In the V7.4.4 client, the default of -1 will assign CPU:11 which will not get assignments. Setting 12 is likely to reduce the throughput of your GPU slot which will cost more than reducing the CPU count to an acceptable falue. Manually setting it to 9 (or maybe 10) would be better.

I posted all relevant information CPU 12 in system tab and default on slot threads (which is showing that it is default by lack of <cpus v='xx'/> in the config settings I posted). I also said that I would just use the GPU so no assumptions needed. The requirements for the assignments changed before the beta was released that looks like it fixes the issue. A new user should not be expected to go into special settings to get the client to work correctly. Hopefully the Beta will be released sooner rather than latter but I understand that the beta will be released full build when it is released. I never expect a launch date to be set since the google compute days.

As far as the CPU client I set it back to default if they are ok with that setting by telling it-1 is going to be the default then it is ok by me. My CPU just won't fold until a public release fixes it no big deal.

If it were my system (and unless you choose to run the beta client), I'd set the CPU count to 9 and run the CPU client. After upgrading the client (to V7.4.15 or later), the new client is going to do something like that for everyone who uses the -1 setting.

I just noticed that my CPU is also without assignment. It had 30 attempts, and everything regarding work server, collection sever, and job assignment consisted of nothing but zeros. Given the number of attempts, and the fact that the wait time between attempts had grown somewhere near two hours between them, I can only imagine it has been close to a day since this project of zeros started, probably sometime yesterday. I tried removing the CPU slot, then replacing it, but it came back to all zeros. Is there some way to get out of this mess?

Is it the number of threads being odd, instead of even, that makes this unstable? I could switch to 12 threads if that might help.

The issue is with CPU thread setting that are multiples of larger prime numbers. In the past that was any prime 11 or greater, and some projects also excluded multiples of 7. In the past couple years, most projects that could use multiples of 7 have finished, and some projects have been identified that have problems with multiples of 5.

If you have a GPU folding, you need to reserve a CPU core for that folding slot. Then set the CPU thread count to a multiple of 2 and/or 3. A multiple of 5 might or might not get an assignment, it depends on which projects are currently active.
