Yes it is a lot better, your PPD will rise over time to 750k PPD for each gtx 1080. So your rig will get 2 x gtx 1080 + gtx 980 ti = 2 Million PPD

toTOW has a good point. Installed a 1080 last week and the PPD fluctuates mostly around a 980ti performance (little better, little worse) and occasionally is no better than my 50 MHz overclocked 980s. The 1080 has not beat my Titan X rigs with a mild (50 to 75 MHz) overclock on any project I can identify. I was planning a major upgrade by swapping out my 980's, but given performance is less than what I expected, I'll take my time. I'll keep a closer eye on the 1080's performance and download the HFM csv file to look more closely at the results over the weekend.

One generation of GPU to another is rarely a good purchase. Price to performance difference is too little.
2nd gen or later upgrades make more sense when strictly folding. If you're gaming also, game with whatever you can afford.

As compared to what? Would be nice to see actual numbers and not just a statement. Also, how many months of electricity used for folding does a new 1080 pay for by staying with a 980 from the previous generation?! Might be long enough to see the 1180 release.
Look, we get it, you are enamoured with the new NV hardware. Everyone likes shiny new toys. And NV did a good job on this generation. But it is more helpful to post actual numbers than to guess at what "amazingly lower power consumption" actually means.

He means the performance in folding compared to watt usage is better than previous maxwell gpu generation.

Both good indicators. But Max Watts is not the same as Folding Watts. And the fah benchmark is not actual PPD. Just saying...

1070 is about 10% faster (PPD) than 980Ti and use about half the watt.

Yeah, I think the point 7IM was making regards the cost benefit of REPLACING existing cards.
Saving around 100 watts will save you around $100 per year when running continuously, at average electricity costs in the US.
Hence, if you already have a 980TI, investing in a new 1070 will require nearly 4 years to "pay for itself" in efficiency savings alone.
Of course, YMMV. Your electricity costs may be higher, you may be paying cooling, which effectively doubles the rate of payback, you may like the lower fan noise and less heat in your living conditions...etc. etc. etc.
However, everyone will have to look at these factors for themselves, it is just not a clear cut and dry, black and white choice.

Here my real life example: the WU assigned are from the same family, on the text screen you can see the temps and power as recorded by nvidia-smi
The 1070 benched a 970 (which took 151W at the same projects and less then half of PPD)

Having observed the introduction of new generations of GPUs, I've noticed a pattern .. although there's no guarantee it will be repeated in the future.
The performance of the FIRST model of a new generation almost matches the performance of the top model of the previous generation but with significantly improved power consumption. Later other models are introduced with higher performance, up to a level of power consumption equivalent to the previous top-of-the-line model. Also lower priced models are introduced that compare favorably with the previous generation's mid-range models in performance or power consumption or initial price, while the prices of the previous generation move downward.
In other words, if you're looking ONLY for improved PERFORMANCE (as many FAH Donors are) you're more likely to find it in the second or third model of the new generation introduced.
