it's not folding!!

Post by ccsergent »

the Web control shows I have an unit loaded. but it doesn't do anything.

laptop: MacBook Air running OS X 10.10.5

status:
Paused
on battery

if I plug on the power the status will change to Ready. but doesn't matter if the When is set to "while I'm working" or idle the progress bar is always 0. increase or decrease Power doesn't change anything either.

stats:
Date of last work unit None
Total score 0
Overall rank (if points are combined) 1800770 of 1800770
Active clients (within 50 days) 0
Active clients (within 7 days) 0

thanks for the help!

There are two important settings that might explain what's happening. If not, see the link in my Signature block.

1) Run on Battery (T/F)
2) Run on Idle (AKA "while I'm NOT working") (T/F)

The first is designed to make sure you son't run your battery down when you're not connected to power. The second is designed to keep FAH from using enough of the GPU's resources that you perceive an unacceptable delay. They can each be turned on or off (independently).

The idle condition is the same condition that normally would activate a screen-saver if you had one though you don't actually need one except perhaps to test that the system is actually indicating it's idle.

Also, the progress indicator needs an appreciable amount of progress before it registers.

If a computer is configured to sleep while idle, obviously no progress would be made.

I have left the power plugged in for over 12 hours. still no progress.

I set it to run "while I'm working" and opened the FAHControl. status is Ready. I clicked the Fold button to manually start the process. status is still Ready. I assume it will be "run" or "active" if it IS running? I went back to the Web control panel and it was sleeping. why? it's set to "while I'm working".
BTW, the Fold/Pause/Finish buttons are kind of grayish as if it's not active. but the label of each button are crispy black.

the FAHViewer panel Status shows Protein: Loading. not Loaded? Connection: Connected

Forget FAHViewer. It doesn't work with all the cores.

Look at Advanced Control, then follow the instructions linked in Bruce's sig above to post your log.

We're still missing the hardware/software profile.

To view it in FAHControl, click the System Info tab. If you look in the log file on disk, it's the first page.

Re: it's not folding!!

Post by Joe_H »

Looking over your log I don't see any configuration issues in particular, though you may want to remove the Fold on Idle setting for a CPU slot. However it appears you may have run into a known network bug in the client during the download of the folding core:

Code: Select all

16:21:22:WU00:FS00:Downloading core from http://web.stanford.edu/~pande/OSX/AMD64/Core_a4.fah
16:21:22:WU00:FS00:Connecting to web.stanford.edu:80
16:21:23:WU00:FS00:FahCore a4: Downloading 1.86MiB
16:21:29:WU00:FS00:FahCore a4: 23.57%
16:21:35:WU00:FS00:FahCore a4: 47.14%
16:21:41:WU00:FS00:FahCore a4: 70.70%
17:21:44:190:127.0.0.1:New Web connection
The download reached 70% and then died. The bug is that the client sometimes does not detect a a loss of connection and retry the download or upload. This is more common with wireless connections that might be temporarily interrupted.

To recover from this the FAHClient process needs to be restarted. The easiest method for doing that is rebooting your Mac. This can also be done from the command line in the Terminal app, it involves unloading and reloading the FAHClient background process.
