Core 21 not working on Radeon 6850

Post by _r2w_ben »

System configuration is as follows:
AMD A8-7600 Kaveri (SMP 2 cores)
APU R7 Graphics (Spectre) (GPU slot)
GPU: Radeon 6850 (Barts) (GPU slot)

Core 17 runs fine on both GPUs. Core 21 runs fine on the graphics portion of the APU. Core 21 on the 6850 causes a display driver reset several times and a complete lock-up once.

Does Core 21 require OpenCL 2.0 support or does it have an OpenCL 1.2 code path as well?

In the log below you can see that Spectre supports OpenCL 2.0 but the CPU and 6850 do not. Is it possible the detection code finds that one GPU supports 2.0 and then incorrectly attempts to use that on the 6850, which only supports 1.2?

What catalyst driver version? And how did you determine which custom index settings to use on the GPU slots?
How to provide enough information to get helpful support

same problem with core 21 GPU.

My system is:

CPU: AMD FX-8150
GPU:ATI RADEON HD-6850
OS: WINDOWS 10 PRO (64bit).

gpu driver constantly crashes with core 21.

Catalyst 15.7.1
I configured the index settings about a year ago using a guide on this forum. I think I used GPU-Z to monitor load when only one GPU slot was running.

Have you checked recently to see if those index settings are still valid? Connected with the values being not set correctly initially, have been reports in the past that some system changes such as video driver upgrades can cause the indexes to change again.

The indexes are working as expected. The 6850 works great when it is assigned Core 17 work.

My original question about OpenCL versions has not been answered. Does Core 21 require GCN which debuted in the 7xxx series of cards? Can someone check the stats to see if any AMD pre 7xxx series cards have completed p9704 or p9712 work units?

I did some digging in the beta forum and found that Core 21 requires OpenCL 1.2 for AMD and OpenCL 1.1 for nVidia.

Is double precision required for Core 21? The 6850 does not have that capability.

Double precision is not required, and not used. I have asked the core 21 developers about minimum hardware support on AMD GPUs.
How to provide enough information to get helpful support

Hi all, I've been monitoring this thread and I'll try to get some answers out of the devs

@_r2w_ben: If you want to do an experiment you can try running FahBench 2.1.2 beta on your device to see if that works.
Because FahBench 2.1.2 uses the same OpenMM like Core_21 just to see if this fails too.

I had some more time to experiment with FahBench. Since the benchmark ran without crashing, I figured there must be a difference between it and the work units that are failing.

Comparing Integrator.xml, I noticed the benchmark uses VerletIntegrator and p9704 uses LangevinIntegrator. I edited the benchmark explicit file to use LangevinIntegrator and it ran without issue.

Then I noticed that system, state, and integrator can be manually specified as parameters via the command-line. Not knowing if it was possible, I attempted to use the p9704 work unit files I had backed-up. The Display Driver reset within a couple seconds of the 6850 jumping up to it's max clock. Since it started doing something, could it finish if it had more time? To answer that I starting looking for a way to increase the display driver timeout. I ended up here and TdrDelay looked like what I needed. The default of 2 seconds made sense since I was seeing the reset happen very quickly. I added the registry key and set it to 10 seconds. After restarting the machine, I reran the same test with p9704 work unit. This time, the display driver did not reset and FahBench started to report progress at 0.70 ns/day! :D

Based on ns/day, the system in p9704 must be about 10x more complex than the benchmark. It appears that the amount of work in-flight requiring completion before the 6850 can context switch and respond to the Windows heartbeat exceeds the default of 2 seconds. I am going to leave the timeout at 10 seconds and report back the next time the 6850 is assigned a Core 21 work unit.

Development is aware of the TDR issue and is devising a plan to deal with it. In the meantime, your work-around of 10 seconds is a reasonable.
