Core_21 v11 (P9712) not working with Win XP 64-bit

Post by DutchForce »

I still have a folding system with 3x GTX660 Ti's running Windows XP 64-bit and NVidia driver 327.23.
I'm using the advanced flag and today I got a Core_21 (P9712) WU and got a popup screen with:
"The procedure entry point Acquire SRWLockShared could not be located in the dynamic Link Library KERNEL32.dll"

After acknowledging this message I got "FahCore returned an unknown error code which probably indicates that it crashed" in my log.

I paused all the slots (stopped FAHClient) and upgraded the NVidia driver to 347.88 (this driver works fine on my other system with 2x GTX780 Ti's running Win7 Pro 64-bit and P9704 Core_21 WUs).
After starting the slot again, I got the same message and core crash, so I paused the slot again (stopped FAHClient) and upgraded to the latest NVidia driver 353.62, but I still get the same message and core crash.
I always upgrade the NVidia driver with a "Clean install" and restarted the system after each driver upgrade.

After 5 attempts (with the popup message) it had "Too many errors, failing" and send the failed WU.

Here is the System and Config info (with NVidia driver 353.62):

I noticed that the only difference between the drivers is the CUDA Driver version, CUDA remains the same:
Driver 327.23: CUDA = 3.0 and CUDA Driver = 5050
Driver 347.88: CUDA = 3.0 and CUDA Driver = 7000
Driver 353.62: CUDA = 3.0 and CUDA Driver = 7050

On my GTX780 Ti's system (Win7 Pro 64-bit) and 347.88 driver: CUDA = 3.5 and CUDA Driver = 7000

So I think Core_21 v0.0.11 does not work with Win XP 64-bit and I have removed the advanced flag for now.

Are core 17 and 18 working on this configuration ?

The driver is probably too old. I think the minimum requirement to fold with OpenCL cores is somewhere in the 340+ series of drivers ... (sorry, I don't remember the exact version number) It has to include support for OpenCL 1.1.

All Core_17 and Core_18 projects are working fine with this system (running 24/7) and driver 327.23, no problems at all.
As I've mentioned in my post, I've upgraded the drivers to the latest 353.62 and I still get the same message and not working.

7im, what is the source for this? My 780Ti on Linux runs Core18 and Core21 on 346.59. Obviously I'm a little out of date but AFAIK updating has not been recommended on any faulty WU reports I've seen here.

My 780 Ti is running fine on cores 17, 18 and 21 with 346.35 (Linux Mint 17.2)... as are the GTX 980's.

(I thought I'd updated the drivers to .59 a while ago but I obviously forgot  )

It may be that later drivers are required for Windows than Linux?

It would be a good time to consider upgrading the OS (noting you're not even on the latest SP for XP). Get a cheap version of Win 7 at an online auction site, and then get the free upgrade to Win X.

http://developer.download.nvidia.com/co ... _Notes.pdf
The following features are officially unsupported in the current release. Developers must employ alternative solutions to these features in their software.
Windows XP 64-bit Edition Support
With this release, CUDA no longer supports the 64-bit version of the Windows XP operating system, although CUDA on the 32-bit version of Windows XP is still supported. We recommend that developers and users of the 64-bit version of Windows XP migrate to Windows 7
If this isn't the problem with Core 21, it soon will be. Turning off the Advanced setting only works until Core 21 goes public.

@ davidcoton: Those are not the minimum required versions, but the versions where the client runs better due to changes in those cores, the drivers' features support, in general. It does not include the old 327.xx fix for certain GPUs. IIRC, that was fixed in later versions of those fahcores, and so no longer applies anyway.

WARNING: This is slightly off topic, subject was Win XP 64.

Thanks 7im.

It is interesting that, while nVidia has later drivers for Linux, 346.59 seems to be the latest in the Ubuntu repositories. This may or may not be for a good reason.

The procedure entry point Acquire SRWLockShared

A google search of that will show that vista or higher is needed for that function. Not sure if they can limit assignments based on windows version or not but core 21 wont work on XP unless they can change the core.

Thanks for the info, 7im.

I've always installed all the updates via Microsoft Update and as far as I know SP2 is the latest Service Pack for XP 64-bit.
SP3 is only released for the 32-bit version, see: Learn how to install Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3)
Notes:
There's no SP3 for the 64-bit version of Windows XP.
I've already planned to upgrade this system soon to Win7 Pro 64-bit (I still have one unused copy) and GTX980 Ti.

@ Rel25917, thanks for the info.

That turned out to be a bad move. System started trashing every GPU WU. Had to reinstall Ubuntu. :(

Someone mentioned some while ago that drivers from ppa's sometimes have bits missing, eg xorg-edgers had no CUDA drivers at one point iirc.

Although it's a bit of a chore, I've always found it safest to get the drivers from the NVidia site and install them the hard way- from a command prompt.

edit: to get this (more or less) back on topic- I don't use Windows, but if I did I think I'd prefer to use the drivers from NVidia rather than hope that MS hadn't incorporated their own "improvements" before releasing them for update (not sure how that applies to Windows 10 though)

Windows Update doesn't approve all of the versions that NVidia creates ... but I'm not aware of them "improving" the versions that they do distribute.

We're restricting the assignment server to only assign core21 projects to > xp

edit: to prevent unnecessary restriction, I've set it to make sure it's *not* windows xp. So you may still get an assignment on windows 98 or something, but then shame on you
