"Failed" GPU folding w/ Radeon HD 4770, Linux, Windows

Post by volcomp1 »

Hi all,

I have experience setting up folding for standard CPU folding with the V7 client on both Windows and Linux.
I'm having trouble configuring a new machine for GPU folding. The GPU is the Radeon HD 4770. The CPU is an i7-860, and it is working very well with the V7 client.

I've tried with both Linux (Mint 17, Xubuntu 14) and Windows Server 2K8 and am getting the same problems. I would very much prefer to be able to configure this on Linux, as I don't have many Windows licenses to spare.

Here's what I'm doing:
1) downloaded and insalled the 64 bit V7 client from the folding.stanford.edu site. Also installed the V7 control for linux.
2) start CPU folding without any problems on either OS.
3) Go to Configure>>Slots. Add a GPU client with index 0. If I do it with the preset index -1, it disappears after saving.
4) The GPU appears in the Folding Slots as "gpu:0:RV740 [Radeon HD 4770]"
5) I select the GPU and click "Fold"

Here's what happens at this point:
1) It briefly says "Running" under "Folding slots" and "Download" in the corresponding spot in the Work Queue.
2) It then abruptly stops and says "Failed".
3) When I try to start it through the web control, it briefly begins spinning the green arrow circle, shows some work unit information, then shows a yellow circle and the work unit information disappears.

Here is the log from Linux (Mint) for the process I described above:

Any help and advice is greatly appreciated. Again, I would prefer a Linux-based solution.

Is that GPU supported by folding in Linux? Check the Linux install guide on the fah web site.
How to provide enough information to get helpful support

I can't seem to find the list of supported GPUs right now. Can you point me to it?

IIRC, it was however listed as a supported GPU. Whether that was for Linux or Windows I can't recall. Either way, the same problems/error logs are happening in windows as well.

I see from the OP's log:

Code: Select all

19:06:32:WU01:FS01:Connecting to 171.67.108.200:80
19:06:33:WU01:FS01:Assigned to work server 171.64.65.124
19:06:33:WU01:FS01:Requesting new work unit for slot 01: READY gpu:0:RV740 [Radeon HD 4770] from 171.64.65.124
19:06:33:WU01:FS01:Connecting to 171.64.65.124:8080
19:06:34:WU01:FS01:Downloading 891.93KiB

etc
If the GPU isn't supported, shouldn't the WS decline to supply a WU?

edit- and shouldn't it be removed from GPUs.txt?

Thanks, interesting.

Are there any workarounds?

This article (from 2009) seems to suggest that it's possible: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphi ... 0-512mb/12

Possibly using an older version of the folding client?

Not even using an older version of the client. The folding core used by the 4000 series back then was based on ATI's proprietary coding and that core was Windows only as well. It was deprecated and reached end of life a couple years ago when ATI/AMD dropped support for that coding language and changed to supporting only OpenCL. The OpenCL support in the 4000 series GPU's was not high enough for the cores written to use OpenCL.

P.S. The beginning section of the log showing system information was not supplied. It should show the 4770 as unsupported. Both entries in the most recent version of GPUs.txt do show that:

Code: Select all

0x1002:0x9485:::RV740 Pro [Radeon HD 4770]
0x1002:0x94b3:::RV740 [Radeon HD 4770]
The sequence of colons in the middle with no numbers means the card is not supported for folding.

OK thank you for that information. I was under the impression that any GPU would work, now I know.

I suppose I'll see what I can get for this GPU on ebay or craigslist and purchase another which is supported.
