Ubuntu - GPU just downloads, sends, downloads, sends

Post by runpaint »

I have installed FAH on Windows machines since 2007,
but I've notice some slight differences with Linux.
The main difference is that I can't get it to work.

I just got this 2U blade server with Ubuntu, and I've never used Linux before.
It had FAH installed and running, but very slowly on this old i7 and GTX560ti,
with NVIDIA version 343.13, and 4 case fans that sound like a crashing airplane.
So I replaced the 560ti with a new 750ti, but then it wouldn't work with GPU.
So I put back in the 560ti, but then it still wouldn't work with GPU.

So I uninstalled FAHClient, FAHControl, and FAHViewer,
and then reinstalled all of them. But then it wouldn't even work with CPU.
It's a 64 bit system, but then I tried the 32 bit version just to see if it would work.
It didn't work. Then I uninstalled and reinstalled 2 or 3 more times,
and eventually I got it to work with CPU again, but it only loads FAHControl on startup,
and I have to start FAHClient in a terminal.
I've also tried starting FAHCoreWrapper in a terminal,
before or after I start FAHClient, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

So I figured if it's going to be complicated anyway, I might as well do it like I want,
and I put the 750ti back in, downgraded the drivers to 340.32
because that's the official recommended version for my card,
and I removed the CPU slot because it's too slow, the fans are much too loud,
and it's not worth running 7 cores for 7 days per WU @ >200ppd and missing the Timeout.

Then it still wouldn't recognize the GPU, so i had to add the GPU.txt file,
but I didn't have root permission, so I had to find out how to run Nautilus,
but then I first had to install gksu, so I did, and I put the GPU.txt in the folder,
and that is the story of how I added a GPU slot, but it won't fold.

So I changed the drivers back to 343.13, and it won't fold,
so I finally registered for an account after reading a lot of advice here,
and hopefully the way you post logs is by putting them in quote brackets.

Bad platformID size is an error associated with having video drivers that do not support OpenCL fully.

OK, since 340.32 didn't work, and 343.13 didn't work, I purged the Nvidia drivers.
Then I reinstalled the desktop after the purge, then I downloaded Nvidia 331.
That didn't work, so I downloaded Nvidia 337.25, then that didn't work, so I put it back to 340.32.
Here are the terminal commands I used:

sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa -y
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-331

Then I rebooted.
Then I went to Drivers, Additional Drivers, and I was going to select Nvidia 331,
but it was selected to x-org Nouveau driver without a version number,
and version 331 wasn't in the list, but 340 and 343 were,
when I thought they'd be gone after the purge,
and the GPU still wouldn't fold.

So I downloaded 337.25 from Nvidia, because it said the latest long-branch
was 340.32, which already didn't work for me, so I got the latest short-branch version
even though I don't know what that means. But then 337 also didn't show up in my driver list,
so I put it back on 340 and rebooted. The screen came up low-resolution, so something had changed,
but I went into Additional Drivers and it was selected back on Nouveau driver.

So I installed 340 in a terminal with sudo apt-get install nvidia-340,
and just for good measure I gave it the old sudo apt-get --purge remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau.

Then I rebooted, then:

FAHCoreWrapper start
sudo /etc/init.d/FAHClient start

And it's still saying bad platform ID size.

Welcome to the folding@home support forum runpaint.

What version of Ubuntu are you using and was it a clean install or an upgrade.

The minimum driver version for a 750ti in Linux is 334.21 so installing 331 may have caused an initial problem and without purging them before trying a later version that problem may still be there.

Try this:

sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
Go to Additional Drivers and select 334.21 or higher ... usually the words "proprietary" and "tested", not "nouveau" or "updates", will be displayed after the entry that should be selected although I'm not sure with xorg-edgers since I don't use it because all my GPUs are supported in Ubuntu 14.04 ... I don't have a 750ti currently.
Reboot.

Try again. :ewink:

OK, I did that again, and the same thing happened again.

Actually, purge nvidia* didn't do anything, so I tried sudo purge nvidia*, and that didn't do anything,
so I tried sudo apt-get purge nvidia*, and that one worked.

I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. I don't know if it was a clean install,
I bought it used and it was already running FAH when I got it,
and the CPU and GPU work units were working properly when I got it,
but the GPU hasn't worked since I put in the 750ti.

Sorry for not giving you the entire command ... you'd already used it so I didn't think you needed it spelled out ... fixed in previous post ... you got there eventually.

(Was 14.04 a new install or an upgrade from a previous version?
If it was an upgrade and you didn't purge xorg-edgers before upgrading you may need to reinstall a clean version of Ubuntu 14.04.)

Noticed your edit so the above may not be applicable.

What versions are available in Additional Drivers?

Was xorg-edgers installed when you got it or did you install it after?

If you open a terminal and type nvidia-settings does a graphic window open and is the driver version shown what you expect?

When I got it, it had Nouveau available in the drivers list but 343.13 was installed.

At one point I used the lspci command to verify that the kernel driver was nvidia,
and Nvidia settings shows the 750ti and driver 343.13.

One thought -- does the Maxwell GPU need the latest (0.0.55?) Core_17? Is it available for Ubuntu?
If it is needed, and if as I think it's Windows only, then I don't think a 750Ti will fold under Ubuntu yet.

Well that would explain why it's not working.
I'll shelf that project and continue with Plan B, which involves trying to run 6 graphics cards in one computer.

Or I guess I could at least put the 560ti back in and run that.

I put the 560ti back in, and the control panel just freaked out,
switching back and forth between "ready" and "running" several times per second,
with all the fields and values just changing and flashing.

So, that's it.

The first time I put the 560 back in after I took it out,
I probably didn't have it plugged in right,
and that's probably the only reason it didn't work,
so I probably shouldn't have uninstalled or reinstalled anything,
and it would probably still be working if I hadn't done anything at all.

Oh well, at least I learned a little about Linux.

Right, 750 won't run in Linux yet.

When swapping cards, you need to reinstall the client for it to detect the change correctly.

And the Linux installation is much simpler following the Linux Install Guide on the fah web page, and using the gdebi package installer.

You'll also need to apt-get the package nvidia-opencl-icd-331. It's not installed by default with the nvidia-331 package.

Update -

I decided to remove the gpu slot for now, and I'm running the CPU on 8 cores at 12,000ppd.

Thanks to everyone for your help!
