GTX 670's not pulling Core_17 anymore

If you think it might be a driver problem, see viewforum.php?f=79

GTX 670's not pulling Core_17 anymore

Post by Bleeder »

Hello... I have 2 GTX 670's. I'm running Windows 8.1 RTM along with NVIDIA drivers 326.80 and 327.23 (have tried both of these). I'm also running the F@H Client 7.3.6.

The GPU slots are configured with client-type=advanced. This setup has worked before with Windows 8.1 preview but now when I fire up F@H the only WU's that will download are Core 15. I have another box folding with Windows 8.1 RTM, an AMD HD 7870XT and F@H client 7.3.6 configured with client-type=advanced and it's pulling core_17's with no problems.

Any thoughts on why this would be happening?

Here my log...

Re: GTX 670's not pulling Core_17 anymore

Post by Jesse_V »

I've been seeing Core 15s for the last day or two on my GTX 480 and GTX 560TI, but both are set to advanced. Although I prefer FahCore_17 WUs, the client-type setting is not a guarantee to get them. If there aren't any advanced-level workunits available, it pulls from the main pool of units, none of which use FahCore 17. The core 17 WUs may in short supply, given the large number of people who are pursuing them, or it could be just coincidence.

It appears to be no coincidence, Jesse_V.
A team member is getting only WU 8018 since several days while using flag advanced.
I think the priority has been raised for them - for whatever reason :?:

:-) thanks for the response but the question that I'm asking is does anyone see a reason for why my AMD GPU is getting Core_17 with no interruption but my NVIDIA's are not.

Has something changed on the server side that would cause this or is there something wrong with my config?

I see nothing wrong with your configuration. If, as folding_hoomer suggested, the priority of some core 15 projects like P8018 has been raised then it would only affect Nvidia since that core is Nvidia only. Priorities can be changed at any time by PG based on their scientific or other needs.

If that's the case then that's pretty disappointing. I don't mind folding some of these older WU's (make them equal weight) but at just about 25% of a Core_17 WU's PPD it's not worth the electricity cost to fold them full time. I'm hoping that this is just a bug in the assignment server.

You could try setting both core 15 slots to Finish. Once they're both finished, completely quit FAHclient and then restart it after waiting a couple of minutes. Sometimes that has worked for me but there's no guarantee.

sounds like the Core_17 has ramped up faster than expected.

If everyone goes to Advanced...then a backlog of unfinished projects for the previous core results.

More Science is getting done from the Volume standpoint...but projects need to run to completion.

So, Core_17 gets moved down in priority so that preceding projects have a chance to run to completion.

I hope you can see why this is important.

It's not a bug. As stated already, Pande Group determines the assignment priorities. And since you've already folded a lot of core 15 WUs, a few more won't hurt anything.

Also note that some core 16 WUs might need some help and the AMD cards would get those. But for now, be thankful the AMD cards are getting a 17s.
