core_16 WUs fail on an HD 7790

Post by dyeman »

I've recently built a new Win 7 64 system with an HD 7790 (Catalyst 13.4). All core_16 WUs fail (see log) until the slot is marked as "Failed".

The card runs core_17 WUs fine. I have two other systems with HD 7770 and HD 7850 respectively that process both core_16 and core_17 WUs fine. These are also on Catalyst 13.4, but being older systems have had several earlier Catalyst releases installed (11.x and 12.x) so could have bits of driver (or more importantly Brook/CAL/Stream runtime libraries??) still floating around, so is it possible there is something core_16 requires that is not present in vanila Catalyst 13.4 default install??

AFAIK, FahCore_16 works great with 12.8 or lower. With the newer drivers, it can be a hit or miss. However, FahCore_17 can work pretty well with the newer WHQL Driver releases. Not sure of any method which would help you to optimize for both FahCores in a single system.

Thanks - I think 7790 is too new to be supported in 12.x drivers. In truth it isn't an issue at the moment unless core_17 WUs aren't available (?? not sure what will happen when core_17 is available by default - will there be any way to specify that core_17 WUs should have selection priority, or that core_16 WUs should not be selected??)

Set client-type to advanced will state a preference for core_17 WUs.

My 7790 works OK (if slowly) on Core_16 with the 13.6 Beta 2 drivers.

I installed the 13.6 beta drivers. According to the custom install, the AMD APP level is the same as in the 13.4 drivers, but the beta did install some microsoft C runtime libraries that weren't installed before. Unfortunately made no difference - same failure. No big deal - the only issue is when core_17 WUs run out (as they did a couple of days ago).

Thanks JimF!
