ERROR:exception: Bad platformId size.

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though NVidia has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

ERROR:exception: Bad platformId size.

I'm trying to run the new Core 17 on my laptop (running Kubuntu 13.04 with kernel 3.8.0-19-generic)'s GPU, which is the GeForce GTX 675M. The core downloads, and tries to run, but errors and quits like so:

FYI, on my GTX 675M, in Windows, it takes slightly over 24 hours (TPF 15:03 which results in 1.05 days) to fold a Project 8900 WU.

I got the bad platformid error when I first got Core17 units on Ubuntu -- turned out the nVidia drivers were not correctly installed (with all the jazz about stopping the X server, and removing Nouveau drivers, something went wrong).

The solution (for me, on a dedicated machine) was to reinstall Ubuntu 13.04, and select the nVidia 310 proprietary drivers from the Software Updater, Settings, Additional Drivers. Then the driver installation worked easily and correctly.

I just encountered the same error on a new setup. I had mis-configured the ethernet interface :oops: and had to re-compile the kernel with the correct driver. I had forgotten that when you re-compile the kernel, it is necessary to re-build the NVIDIA driver after rebooting with the new kernel. Re-installing the NVIDIA driver and rebooting fixed my problem.

I have already installed nvidia-current. Also it is not being used as my default driver, the Intel graphics driver is (which is why I have to use Bumblebee's optirun).

I can install the proprietary drivers but cannot use them by default, only through Bumblebee.

There's a lot about Linux that I don't know. On my Ubuntu system, I'm running the proprietary drivers without problems. What's different?

Bumblebee is a program which allows me to use a discrete GPU on only certain applications. Because Nvidia optimus does not work well on laptops running Linux, I'm either stuck with my low-power, weak, integrated Intel GPU, or stuck with my over-powered, battery-devouring discrete Nvidia GPU. But with Bumblebee I can run "optirun FAHClient" and when it runs, it will be able to access the Nvidia GPU.

Without Bumblebee I can't use my GPU on my laptop right.

From the FAQ:
The Bumblebee server disables the discrete video card if no client is detected (if power management is enabled which is the default setting). This is done by keeping track of programs that request Bumblebee to run themselves on the discrete nvidia card. On such requests, a X server is started which makes use of the nvidia card. Because the frames cannot directly be displayed on the display due to the Optimus design, VirtualGL is used to copy frames to the visible display which runs on the integrated Intel GPU.

I can't say I completely understand everything you posted, but I get the general idea.

You're probably the first person to test FAH with bumblebee. Somebody else reported problems with some kind of dual-GPU situation where the system switches between them to save power and they had trouble. They might or might not have worked it out. They never mentioned bumblebee.

FAH does it's own hardware detection and won't run unless it finds a GPU with the required native drivers. If there's an intermediate visualization step it probably won't work.

For FAH, OpenGL isn't helpful. How is OpenCL supported?

I know OpenGL is helpful. I was just trying to show that, to the application, it's entirely transparent. After all Bumblebee does is start up the GPU, put it on display :8, and starts the application while making the GPU available. An application shouldn't be able to know whether it's using the GPU through Bumblebee, or natively.

I find it hard to believe that I am the only one trying to use the GPU client under a Linux laptop with Nvidia Optimus support, if that's the only thing causing problems...

What does the error "ERROR:exception: Bad platformId size." mean, btw?

And can you recommend any OpenCL testing programs so I can see if that works correctly under Bumblebee?

Someone on IRC was testing with Bumblebee a while back. I'll have to find the discussion in the log and see if there's anything helpful to you there.

clbenchmark is a 3rd party app. (have not personally used this one)

The best one is probably FAHBench. It uses fah code to test OpenCL performance. http://www.fahbench.com/

At the present time, FAHBench is Windows-only. I expect it will be ported to Linux but I hesitate to make any predictions about when.
