iceman1992 wrote:artoar_11, how do you get TPF of 15 minutes?? I have a very similar setup, i5-2500K @ 4.1 GHz, VM ubuntu 12.04 64bit, and I get a TPF of more than 17.5 mins.. The difference of 0.1 GHz surely can't give more than 2 minutes??
I found old logs with p7647. Now I'm with client v6.34. This computer has no GPU (I use Intel HD Graphics 3000) and is dedicated to FAH + surfing (3-4 hours). Then the frequency of CPU was 4.20 GHz. MEM is at 1600 MHz/9-9-9-24/1. Win7/64b, VMware-8.0.4/Ubuntu 12.04 (Kernel/3.2.0-27-generic). I have very few programs installed in Win7. I do not know how to comment.

Does RAM significantly affect performance? I use 1333 MHz. I also use VBox instead of VMWare, and I have many programs installed on Win7, although I manually kill unused processes and services..

Yes, PC 10600 = 1333 MHz DDR3. When I changed the frequency in BIOS 1333 -> 1600 MHz, speed increases visibly. Reduce the timings 9 -> 8 had no effect.

Perhaps different projects respond differently of memory OC. Look for reviews of your memory. Can go to 1600 MHz. My Kingston sticks are manufactured for 1600 MHz.

It might have improved but last I heard vbox did not scale with cores as well as VMware, so I would normally flag that as a factor

I'm running 7646 on a 4.6Ghz 3570k and getting really high TPF. My memory is set to 1866Mhz. Not running any other programs either.

I'll agree with Vbox not performing the best. I lose 4mins / frame using a Vbox install with 8101's compared with a dedicated *nix install... Which relates to about 16k ppd

If you are asking why the TPF is high, look for any background processes that regularly consume CPU time. There are a number of services for instance in Windows that can continuously use 10-30% or more of a core. That is enough to cause the TPF to increase disproportionately.

HankScorpio, have you double-checked the logs to make sure the reported TPF is correct? FAHControl has some known issues with its TPF estimations.

Beyond that, while the frame times seem high, I wouldn't classify them as "really high." I have a 3770K @4.3 (and 1866 ram) that, best-case, does about 13:30 TPF on 7645/6/7, and is usually more along the lines of 14:30. The usual speedup quote I've seen from hyperthreading is 15-20%; if your 3570K had 20% better frame times, it'd be sitting at about 15:30, which isn't terribly far off from what I'm seeing. Granted, your CPU is running a bit faster, but these WUs are rather long when compared to many other SMP projects.

Does taskmgr show 99% of the CPU going to FahCore_a4? If not, what else is taking resources? When you run SMP:4, it's really important that all four cores of your CPU are devoted to FAH most of the time. Any process which continually uses a reportable amount of CPU time will slow down FAH. FAH is designed that way intentionally so that when you want to use your machine, FahCore_a4 backs off. In fact, it backs off non-linearly. A continuous drain of as little as 2% can increase the TPF by as much as maybe 15 - 20%.

We don't have any accurate reports on the built-in GPU on Ivy Bridge. The GPU may steal resources from the CPU and it may not. Did you happen to be watching a video or doing something else that makes heavy use of the GPU?

Yes 99% most of the time is devoted to FahCore_a4. I've just completed the 7646 WU and the TPF didn't speed up thoughout.

In regards to iGPU on ivy I've got it disabled in the BIOS. I'm also running BOINC milkyway@home for my 7970 but that uses just the gpu and 0.01% cpu. When I turn F@H off the cpu usage drops to 0-1% with BOINC running so I know that's not using much resources. I don't run anything else and have most background programs/utilities disabled. Not using any anti-virus stuff except MSE. the TPF lasted around 20 mins for the 33 hours it took to completed the WU. TPF on this new WU 7610 is 5 mins directly after completing last WU.

HT seems to give me a bit more speedup with these projects than I have seen on other projects. The two main machines I have folding are closely matched, but my son keeps his at SMP 6. Typical TPF times on the i7 860 at SMP 8 are just over 20 minutes, the Xeon W3530 at SMP 6 is just over 24. Current TPF's on WU's being processed right now are:

7647 i7 860 SMP 8 20:02
7645 W3530 SMP 6 24:09

Both are running OS X 10.6.8 at 2.8 GHz. Sometime I will have to test what the change is compared to SMP 4.

Has the benchmarking system changed for these 3 WU? All other GRO-A4 WU on the Projects Summary list with a similar point value have a deadline in the vicinity of thirty days. These have a deadline of 10.4/17.3 days.

The A4 core is designed to be used for both uniprocessor and SMP projects. The classic uniprocessor projects have long deadlines. The SMP projects are considered higher priority and have shorter deadlines. They get correspondingly higher QRB points, but the base points are similar. The uniprocessor projects can be processed on multi-core processors with A4, but have long enough deadlines that single core or part-time processors can complete them. These 764n projects have a minimum core count of 4, though before it was increased I was able to complete them well within the preferred deadline on my Core 2 Duo T8300
