Quadro NVS 160M Failing

Post by AYColumbia »

I installed the new client initially as a service and found several posts in regards to the GPU not working that way. So I reinstalled as a client and verified that the service was removed from the services list. I'm still getting "00 Failed gpu:0:G98M [Quadro NVS 160M]" in the Folding Slots list. This is on a Dell E6500 Latitude laptop with the latest Windows 7 driver 280.26. Am running Windows 7 Enterprise 32-bit with Sp1.

Would be nice to be able to copy the information from the System Info tab. Here's a part of the log:

I noticed that your drivers are only CUDA v1.1 and you should really have as a minimum v2.2 so the first thing I would do is update your video drivers to a more recent version.

Thanks for the info. I had used the nVidia update checker to check for later drivers and it said there were none available. Are the CUDA drivers separate from the video drivers? Sorry for the stupid question but I'm normally an ATI/AMD user. This laptop is provided by my employer so I don't do much with nVidia. I'll check their site to see if there are updates available for the card in this laptop.

CUDA is the Compute level, not driver version. This is just an entry level card with not much folding power. (I get those confused as well...)
CUDA Driver is the driver level.

And a laptop to boot. Could be a temperature problem....

Please download and install the driver version 301.xx, and let's see what happens.

With only 8 Cores, it's unlikely that this device is powerful enough to complete the assignments. I have not searched for whether it supports CUDA 2.2 but possibly not. In that case, we should recommend that this device be removed from the whitelist, thereby limiting V7 to your CPU.

Just FYI, I was using the older v6 with no issues and it always completed its assignments. I use the laptop to work remotely via RDP, so not much used locally and wanted to take advantage of contributing with whatever system I have.

So I updated to the latest, according to nVidia's site, 296.88 driver and it's now working. Still shows CUDA 1.1 though:

Code: Select all

20:31:22:Win32 Service: false

The processing done by either V6 or V7 is is done by the exact same FahCore_11. It doesn't matter which Client starts the FahCore.

I see you have Version 1.31. Was that same version in use on your last successful WU?

Project: 5771 (Run 14, Clone 164, Gen 1309) was successfully reassigned and completed by someone else, so unless it's heat, I can't explain it.

I happen to still have the log for the old version that I removed this morning, so I checked, and it's the same version. I can't explain why the same core would work in v6 with the 280.26 drivers and the new one fails but works with the newer 296.88 drivers. At least I got to update my video drivers and it's working now. :)

I only ran the v6 GPU during "off hours" when I wasn't using the laptop and it wasn't doing anything useful anyway as it did impact performance during normal working hours. It caused too many "pauses" during normal use.

You're not the only one who experiences "screen lag" when FAH is folding on a GPU that's also refreshing an active screen. There is no known cure.

Which version of V6 were you running and did you use a -forcegpu setting?

I already uninstalled the old version, deleted my install files and my short cuts. But I think it was versin 6.23 and I do remember having to put some parameters on the short cuts but don't remember what they were.

Not completely accurate. You can't cure it, but there a several options that can try to make it usable (you can try to treat the symptoms of the disease ;)). Making sure Aero is turned on. Using the newest drivers. Setting the CPU slider lower to steal a few cycles back helps reduce lag. It also depends on the hardware. GPUs with more shaders tend to lag a bit less, so these may not help as much on this entry level card. Doesn't hurt to try them...

I'm curious about this. When I was running v6, I had both the CPU and GPU with separate client front ends that I can configure. However, I did try the "CPU" slider on the GPU client but it never did anything from what I could tell.

On the new client, from what I can see, there aren't separate "throttle" controls for each type, i.e., GPU and/or CPU. I'm not an advanced user so I bet they are available under some advanced setting that I might mess up like under the Slots configuration. When I have time, I'll have to read up on those advanced options.

Folding with your cpu is already great contribution that you can continue while you sort out the gpu options. Ask if you have more questions later on...

Thanks 7im. Am folding with both now and am not seeing any screen "lag" like I did with v6. I do have one strange issue. Almost two days ago, a Send line appeared in the Work Queue section. It's the first line, i.e., "00 Send ... 15 hours 31 minutes" with Credit as "Unknown" and PRCG as "5769 (7, 91, 4467." I assume this is the send process that sends the completed data? Why would it be in the Work Queue for almost two days now?
