Folding with an ad hoc wifi connection?

Post by superkingkong »

Hi guys,

I'm folding with my laptop. This end of the month, I'll will be travelling, few days I'll mostly be in the airport. Can i still fold? I mean, can the client send or download WU in batch and then fold them? When I manually connect to a free wifi, WU will automatically be sent /receive from the server. Maybe I'll be online once a day at minimum or maybe few times. Can this be done?

Thanks.

Continue to let the client fold as normal. No way to batch workunits because of the serial nature of the work units.

I have sent units from my netbook while at airports no problem, usually the connection is good enough to do this.
Be aware however that folding while on battery is not such a great thing for battery life, I usually switch off unless I can plug in somewhere.

Unlike many other DC projects, speed matters to F@h. XXXX (YYYY, ZZZZ, n) can't be processed until XXXX (YYYY, ZZZZ, n-1) is completed. I'm sure you can download a WU, process it totally offline, and then connect and send it back, but just bear that in mind. If you search the forum for sneakernetting, you'll find similar advice.
F@h is now the top computing platform on the planet and nothing unites people like a dedicated fight against a common enemy. This virus affects all of us. Lets end it together.

WiFi connections in Airports and Coffee Shops are regular WiFi connections (often with security disabled) not ad-hoc connections, but yes, they do work. As I'm sure you know, your bonus points will be reduced significantly if you can't return the completed results promptly so I try to only fold if I'm confident that I'll have a connection at about the time the current WU finishes -- and if I'll only be folding on batteries a very brief time, if at all. Typically I use -oneunit or Finish before I leave home and then only resume folding if I'm confident that I'll have power and a connection when I need them. Those are judgement issues, though, not absolute answers to will it work or not.
