GTX 690 card Linux/Windows

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though NVidia has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

GTX 690 card Linux/Windows

Post by standev »

I've got Nvidia Geforce GTX 690 card in my PC which runs F@H 24x7 basically. I wasn't able to use this card in Linux version, and I wasn't even able to use it in Windows 7. FAHControl doesn't see it, it says: GPUs: 0 in System Info.

So if anyone could guide me how I can use it, I'd be happy to contribute this card's power to a good cause. Linux solution would be preferred, as I rarely boot to Windows.

Hello standev, welcome to the forum.

Folding on GPUs is not yet supported in Linux.

If you would like help with Windows, please post the ***System*** section of the log from the V7 client. Thanks.

Thank you for your help, 7im. Sure, I'd like help with Windows, even though I boot into it rarely, I could still launch folding on the card when I do. Here's the System section of the log:

Okay, I have browsed related topics to find a solution, so I've downloaded GPUs.txt and moved it into FAHClient's running directory. After I opened FAHControl, then Configure -> Connection -> [Stop] local client, then [Start], now it can see my graphics card. So then I opened Configure -> Slots and added 4 gpu slots.

Now it's like this in the Log:

Code: Select all

11:53:49: GPUs: 4
11:53:49: GPU 0: FERMI:1 GK104 [Geforce GTX680]

11:53:49: CUDA Driver: 4020
11:53:49:Win32 Service: false
11:53:49:***********************************************************************

11:53:49:Enabled folding slot 02: READY gpu:1:"GK104 [Geforce GTX680]"

11:53:49:Enabled folding slot 05: READY gpu:3:"GK107 [GeForce GTX 690]"
I don't see any errors in the log, but all gpu slots are stuck at 0.0%, looks like nothing is happening.

Was this just a typo? It should say

Code: Select all

www.stanford.edu
.

Also, the a4 core is not a GPU core. It's used for SMP and Uniprocessor WUs.

bollix47, thank you for your help. I figured that the problem was that I've put GPUs.txt in the wrong directory (I should have put it in C:\Users\myusername\AppData\Roaming\FAHClient). So when I have put it in the correct directory and properly restarted FAHClient in FAHControl, it can now see my graphics card. Please check my previous post, I've edited it to describe where I'm currently stuck, that is - gpu slots seem to be stuck at 0.0%.

Shutdown FAHClient and FAHControl.

Then open a Command window and run FAHClient.exe --lspci and post the output here.

UPD: Okay, in the Windows Task Manager I can see that FahCore_a4.exe is taking about 63%, and there are 4 FahCore_15.exe processes which take 8-9% of CPU power. So it looks like it's doing something. Perhaps I just have to wait longer to see some progress? It's odd, because now smp's work unit is estimated to be completed in 21 hours (previously it was like 4-8 hours per work unit). Total estimated points per day is only 1232 (I used to have more like 30,000). All folding slots are at 0.0% currently, including smp.

UPD2: I have paused gpu slots in FAHControl, and now at least smp slot is working again. Seems like gpu slots were blocking smp from getting started.

I'm not sure why you're showing 2 680s in FAHControl. I don't see any in your lspci list.

If you only have one 690 graphics card in your computer then you should only show 2 690 entries.

GPUs.txt:

Code: Select all

0x10de:0x1180:3:1:GF114 [GeForce GTX 680]
0x10de:0x1188:3:1:GK107 [GeForce GTX 690]
lspci:

Code: Select all

0x10de:0x1188:NVIDIA Corporation:NVIDIA GeForce GTX 690
0x10de:0x1188:NVIDIA Corporation:NVIDIA GeForce GTX 690
Try pausing the following slots to see the effect:

Code: Select all

11:53:49:Enabled folding slot 01: READY gpu:0:"GK104 [Geforce GTX680]"
11:53:49:Enabled folding slot 02: READY gpu:1:"GK104 [Geforce GTX680]"

Thank you for your help. I indeed only have one 690 card. However in System Info of FAHControl I see

Code: Select all

GPUs: 4.
GPU 0: FERMI:1 GK104 [Geforce GTX680].
GPU 1: FERMI:1 GK104 [Geforce GTX680].
GPU 2: FERMI:1 GK107 [GeForce GTX 690].
GPU 3: FERMI:1 GK107 [Geforce GTX 690].
Currently I have paused all gpu slots and I've unpaused only one folding slot 04 which is listed as gpu:2:GK107 [Geforce GTX 690]. In Task Manager I see that FahCore_a4.exe takes 90-91% CPU, FahCore_15.exe takes 8% CPU, however this gpu slot doesn't show any progress, it's stuck at 0.0%.

This is what's in Log:

Currently I have paused all gpu slots and I've unpaused only one folding slot 04
Try unpausing just slot 01.

Done that now (paused all slots including smp and unpaused only slot 01). Effect seems to be pretty much the same. FahCore_15.exe *32 is taking 8% of CPU and 32 976K of memory. Log is as follows:

Basically two of your GPU slots need to be removed, but until one of them shows progress while the other 3 are paused it's hard to say which ones should be deleted. You would think that it's the two 680s that require deleting but one 690 is made up of two 680s so it's a little confusing. I know nvidia is supposed to enhance their drivers for kepler GPUs and maybe even the core is being updated:

Also, you can up the priority:

Configure>Advanced>FAH Priority>Slightly Higher

Thank you for your suggestions. I've set priority to Slightly Higher.
First I removed two GK107 slots and unpaused only 1 of the 2 remaining GK104 (GTX 680) slots. No luck. Then I added two GK107 slots back and removed two GK104 (GTX 680) slots. Again, with no luck. Oh, actually since I've added all gpu slots with -1 index, it reverted remaining 2 slots back to GK104 after restarting FAHClient. So now I removed all gpu slots and added gpu slot with manually set index: 2. So now I have 1 gpu slot GK107 GTX 690. Unfortunately, it still doesn't seem to do anything, stuck at 0.00%.

Perhaps these lines in log have to do something with it:

Code: Select all

13:38:42:WU03:FS01:0x15:GPU device info: vendor=0 device=0 name=<NA> match=0
13:38:42:WU03:FS01:0x15:Client config unavailable.
Or maybe not.

set index: 2
Since you only have 1 double GPU the value of the index should be 0 or 1.
