Radeon HD 6700 Support

Post by imnuts »

I just installed the latest version of the F@H and noticed that it is supposed to support the Radeon 6700 series now. However, when the system tries to start up the GPU client, it continually crashes. Here is the log from the GPU client, which has the same error repeating. It is on the supported GPU list, and I even put the GPUs.txt file in place and restarted the client, but it still isn't working. Anyone know how to fix this? Or do you need more information to be able to fix it?

EDIT - Nevermind. I just updated the drivers for the video card and it started working.

Well, the client started running, but it is not performing any work. After more than an hour, there is no progress for the GPU client, and no further info in the log about the client doing any work either. So, does anyone know how to get the GPU client working properly?

Although it shouldn't be required, please add the option for "client-type" and set it to "advanced" and see if that works better.

Also, is the GPU overclocked?

Added it to the GPU client, stopped and restarted the folding, and it had no effect, still not working. Also, the GPU is running its stock clock speed.

If you start the client interactively does the GPU work?

That fixed it. Is there any specific reason that the GPU client can't be started via the service? Anyway to have the CPU client start as a service, and GPU start via FAHControl?

Yes. GPU via service mode was blocked by Microsoft for security reasons starting with Vista. This is an MS OS issue, not a client issue. The GPU as service still works great in Windows XP.

IIRC, there is no way to start different slots in different modes from one fahclient. And not really worth the hassle of installing and monitoring 2 fahclient instances, as one would be command line only. And while that might work, haven't tried it personally.

Unless the PC sits for long periods with nobody logged in, trying to run the CPU as a service while GPU at startup would only net a very few seconds of additional CPU folding time at each login. How often does happen?

I have done it. As you say, the benefits are small compared to how hard it is to make it work.

Copy the data directory/discard whatever was not there at install-time (queue/slots/etc/UserID (in db????/etc. )/create a shortcut to start it/Coordinate a change of the port number/edit slots/create a service/etc.
