Very few points for WU 8011

Post by Jimbert »

I have an I7 960, 3.2GHz quad core (8 threads). According to Version 7.1.43 of the Folding client, I am only getting 164 points for this unit, which took 34 hours to complete. That is compared to thousands of points for other units that I have folded. For 164 points, I might as well turn off my computer and save the power. Other 8011 units have gotten even worse credit, less than 100.

What else are you running on your computer while processing the Project 8011's? The time they are taking on your computer is not typical. On my 2.8 i7 with SMP-8 I am seeing frame times of about a minute, and total run time of about 1:40 to 1:45. You may see a better throughput with SMP set to 4 or 6 depending on what else your computer is doing.

Yeah you got something going on...a c2d gets about 2:30-3min a frame...love those units.

definately resource starved. Do you have other instances running, GPU, etc.

This will make you a bit sick so sit down.

Single core P4 2.8 ( no HT ) with 512MB memory did 4mn 15sec TPF.

It has been my observation that over the last week or two, project 8011 has consistently had unusually low PPD. On my 2600K @ 4.4 GHz the TPF is about 35 seconds. Using http://linuxforge.net/bonuscalc2.php that's 24,338 PPD, which is about 10k lower than what I usually get and what's expected for the 2600K at my clock. I realize that number crunching is really what it's all about, but the big drop in PPD is a bit discouraging...

I seems to be better after rebooting. An 8011 unit completed in about 7 hours, for 360 points. The new 8011 unit is 18% done and has a TPF of 1min 16sec. I'm not sure why rebooting helped but I guess there must have been some process hung-up hogging CPU cycles, although when I quit Folding, the CPU meter didn't show anything unusual. Maybe there is a bug in the Folding client. I will just have to keep an eye on things and reboot more often.

Joe_H has asked the right question:
Joe_H wrote:What else are you running on your computer while processing the Project 8011's?
The speed at which a SMP project proceeds (TPF) has nothing to do with a bug in the Folding client. The client simply starts FahCore_a4 which does all the work. You're running FahCore_a4:Version 2.27 (Dec. 15, 2010) so nothing has changed recently.

SMP is very sensitive to the number of threads that are available to it. If you configure for SMP:8 and then start another application that consistently uses CPU time (say you allocate one CPU to BOINC or you start a FAH Uniprocessor client or you start an AMD GPU, any one of which will constantly use one of your 8 threads) the SMP process will run at approximately half speed, rather than a speed of 87% as fast (which you might expect since it's asking for 8 threads but you're only providing it with 7 CPUs.

Assuming you have other processes which use a measurable amount of CPU time CONSTANTLY it's much better to leave yourself some headroom and reduce the SMP:8 to maybe SMP:6 or whatever it needs to be so that FahCore_a4 can get access to all the threads it wants (almost) all of the time. Do not set the value to the maximum number of CPUs that it might get, set the value to the minimum number of CPUs that it will be able to get on a consistent basis.

I'm glad that it seems to be better after rebooting. If this ever happens again, look for a task that is hogging CPU cycles before you reboot so you'll know what happened. Rebooting more often doesn't help you find and cure the fundamental issue.
