F@H not continuing WU.

Post by indigenous »

I have started folding again under a new alias. I have folded before, but only for a very short time.

Twice on my laptop the machine has managed to get over half way through a WU, and then all of a sudden it has started from the beginning. Which has left me quite discombobulated. This time it was after a reboot. On both occasions the deadline was over a week away.

Below is the log file. One unknown error found.

Welcome to the Folding@home and to the help forum, indigenous.

I could be wrong, but it looks like it might be working correctly and you may be underestimating how much work it will take your computer to complete a Work Unit.

If it takes a minute or two for FAH to initialize, running a an extremely low priority while everything else is starting up, it won't have time to do anything useful. If you kill the client and restart it too quickly, it will restart from the beginning.

During one of your brief sessions, some progress was stored and was clearly recovered in the last reboot [17:40:15] Completed 12296 out of 7000000 steps (0%) which shows 0.018% progress, rounded off to 0%.

To complete a FAH Work Unit on a (relatively) slow computer generally requires many days of continuous processing and very brief blocks of processing time contribute very little to the required total.

Hmm possibly. I was following the progress closely, every now and then placing my mouse cursor over the F@h icon in systray.
The 0% you see is due to the loss of the WU after the error.
Previous to the error I had what is shown below.

An error was detected at [17:32:35] Gromacs detected an invalid checkpoint. but the actual error occurred some time after [15:10:43] when the message with no time-stamp was written: Folding@Home Client Shutdown. The log does not tell us anything about how FAH was shut down at that point. If you happen to remember, you might be able to provide some additional information about that shutdown.

My comments are based on the information you've presented, plus a guess or two. It's possible that you had to force Windows to shut down using the power button rather than using the menu selection and then allowing windows to complete an orderly shutdown. If that's actually what happened, you were unlucky in selecting that precise time that force Windows to shutdown. I strongly recommend that you avoid all forced shutdown and allow Windows plenty of time to power the system off after you select shutdown/log-off/reboot menu.

If that's not what happened, I don't have an alternative suggestion, thought I'm sure there are other possibles.
