OK so i'm a linux folder and Linux is just a complete nightmare for anyone who grew up and used Windows since 3.1.

Installation on Linux was a long process - and I used other websites to help me through it - the guides on here just didn't make it simple. We need a step by step complete numpty guide (open terminal, type this, agree to this etc etc).

From what I see, Windows users are having problems too. It just comes across very 'fiddly'.

If it was simple and easy, with some kind of pretty GUI for both platforms, I bet there would be a lot more 'everyday people' participating.


Not a moan, more of a suggestion.

As k1wi implied, V7 will address your comments. Ease of install and usability is one of, in not the top goal, in V7.

It's in beta testing phase now, if you wanted to help...

Either of these are excellent guides for getting started.

Linux has always been a Command line OS, it has a GUI but true linux users still use the command line. I've used the [H] guide twice now and found it easy to follow. Linux router's guide is also excellent and it has everything setup on the one ISO ready to go.

V7 does work on linux but I find it more fiddly to get going than teh windows version - but then i'm a total noobie at Linux myself.

V7 in linux is easy.

Click on the .deb or .rpm package download for your OS type.
The OS prompts you to open a package installer. Click okay to use the default installer.
Installer program opens. Click "install"
Click Okay when install is done.
Fah is now installed and running as a service.

You will want to take an extra step to open (Applications/Science) FAHControl and enter your user name, etc.

Done.

With the current installer, the first WU assignment is often downloaded before you have a chance to set up FAHClient with your name/team/passkey/etc. To avoid this problem, I typically disconnect from the internet when performing a new install (after downloading the installer package, of course). The install finishes, the client tries to download and assignment, and I can make any necessary changes using FAHControl before allowing FAHClient to contact the servers.

I'm sure whomever is writing the V7 Linux install guide will NOTE that additional step until V7 software provides a better alternative.

On the other hand, new fah users won't get a bonus on the first 10 WUs anyway.
