Running Multiple Clients (Intel i7 x990 12 CPUs)

Post by natedp »

Hi, I am very interested in running multiple Console versions of this client and I read as much as I could understand about how to achieve this on the FAQ but it does not seem to be reflecting on my User Statistics, it only reports 1 Client Active when I tried to have 1 GUI and 4 Console clients running.

What I did was the following:

1) Download/Install GUI Client
2) Download/Extract Console Client ( f@h_1 )
3) Download/Extract Console Client ( f@h_2 )
4) Download/Extract Console Client ( f@h_3 )
5) Download/Extract Console Client ( f@h_4 )
6) Run GUI Client - Adv. Settings ( -local and ID: 1 )
7) Run f@h_1 - Adv. Settings ( -local and ID: 2 )
8) Run f@h_2 - Adv. Settings ( -local and ID: 3 )
9) Run f@h_3 - Adv. Settings ( -local and ID: 4 )
10) Run f@h_4 - Adv. Settings ( -local and ID: 5 )

Note: All Clients are from the High Performance Clients page

At this point, I had 5 f@h clients running, 1 GUI and 4 Console. But after 2 WUs worth of completion my User Stats still only report 1 Active Client.

I could use some help, please.

My system specs are:

Intel Core i7 990X (6x 3.46GHz/12MB L3 Cache) (12 CPUs)
6 GB DDR3-1600
ATI Radeon HD 5770 - 1GB - HIS IceQ 5 Turbo - Core: 875MHz - CrossFire Mode (Dual Cards)

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

There have been two WUs returned using different MachineIDs but both WUs had errors and received no credit.

You said that you installed a single GUI Client with ID: 1 but the servers received these two GPU WUs from different Machine IDs.

Hi natedp (team 158630),
Your WU (P5734 R2 C606 G407) was added to the stats database on 2011-05-26 23:05:20 for 0 points of credit.
Hi natedp (team 158630),
Your WU (P5732 R2 C591 G420) was added to the stats database on 2011-05-26 21:05:24 for 0 points of credit.

I'm not sure how the servers count clients that have only returned 0-point errors. I suggest you post the FAHlog.txt from the ones you believe have completed WUs and we can see what's going on.

I don't know why you selected -advmethods. That does increase your chances of having errors like the ones that have been reported, but the two are not necessarily related.

Logically, you may want to run two GPU clients, one for each GPU but let's leave that for a later discussion after you get something working.

Did you consider the V7 client? One of it's biggest benefits is a greatly simplified installation. Since you're new to FAH and you're trying to create a complex installation, I think you should also seriously consider scrapping what you've done with V6 client and try the V7 beta client. Most people who are running V7 don't run into any serious problems and compared to the problems that you'll probably encounter before you get everything working in V6, V7 is going to be a breeze.

You'll also benefit because you'll be able to use FahCore_16 which provides OpenCL support for the HD5xxx hardware.

Have you thought aboutr running just the one SMP client and setting it to use all your available cores? (or just 10, so you leave space for your gpu)

Alright so @ bruce,

I did change my GUI Machine ID at one point to get them in order, because it defaulted to 2 (not 1, as the FAQs suggests) and I want my GUI to be #1 and the Consoles to be IDs 2,3,4,5 respectively.

This may be why it reported 2 different Machine ID's when the WUs were returned.

For the V7, I cannot locate that. All the files I see available are all 6.something and the 1.something for PS3

@ k1wi, Would this be an overall increase to my F@H points production without killing my ability to actually do stuff while I am at my computer?

All in all, I would like to maximize my F@H production and maintain the ability to do things. I chat on IRC, browse forums and watch DVDs or play copies of my games using emulation software.

Ok, after this last update I see that I have 511 Score, 3 WUs returned and 2 Active Clients.
I am guessing 1 of my 4 Console Clients was finally working or at least contacting the server as well as my GPU client.

I have uninstalled the V6 GPU Client and deleted all but 1 Console Client folders. I will allow this current client to run while I sleep and see how things look.

I will check this thread when I get up and see about getting my hands on either this V7 Client and/or using the SMP method, provided I can figure it out with whatever information is available.

Thanks for the replies and any future help!

This is the FAHLog.txt for my only remaining client, which will remain running overnight.

Re: Running Multiple Clients (Intel i7 x990 12 CPUs)

Post by k1wi »

Personally I'd say your best bet would be to configure your client in SMP mode if your computer is on 24/7. Obviously you've got a really high powered machine CPU, so I would imagine that performance is important to you.

Therefore, what I'd suggest you try doing is starting off by configuring your folding client for -smp 10 and seeing whether there are any issues with your emulation gaming. I would suspect that there wouldn't be, but if you do find that there is, just drop down the -smp x value. If anything any slow down will be with your folding, but certainly not to the point where your folding performance would drop below that achieved by running multiple regular uni-processor clients. I'd recommend a 'clean' install and following the smp installation guide to the letter (including starting the client with -configonly to start with). In terms of PPD, SMP on an i7 990 will well and truly blow away any sort of multiple uni-proc clients, even if you just ran the same number of threads as you did uni-processor clients.

I know it might seem like a waste of good crunching hardware, but if you do end up running the SMP client, you'd possibly be better off stopping folding on the GPU, those ATI's aren't yet particularly efficient (although there is advancement with the new v7 client that bruce mentioned). Plus it would avoid you having to pause/resume it when you're gaming. All in all it's just a more efficient way to fold.

Make sure you're using a passkey though (this actually applies more and more for all clients) as with SMP and some uni-processor work units you will earn bonus points...

Finally, if you're overclocking at all, keep an eye on your log files/temps/general stability etc etc. FAH runs the CPU much much harder than pretty much any other app out there, even some stress testing apps, so if your machine is overclocked and even the least bit unstable, FAH will reveal it even if other apps don't!

The V7 client can be found here. I'm not pushing it ... just giving you the information you asked for.

If you're running 24x7, then a single SMP client with -smp 10 (or some other value) is much more productive and much easier to install than multiple uniprocessor clients. With dual HD 5770, you probably use your machine for gaming, and if any of the clients are going to interfere with your desired use of the machine, the GPU client(s) are more likely to be noticed than any of the CPU-based clients.

I had assumed that you had chosen multiple clients for a specific reason. We're happy to support you with whatever you choose, whether that's multiple V6 clients, the V7 client, or the SMP client and I should have asked more questions rather than simply answering the questions you asked.

Ok, so I checked in and saw that my Console version was erroring when trying to return the WU it had completed and then it couldn't retrieve a new WU to work on. So no progress was made. Removed all F@H instances from my PC and went with the SMP route.

I just completed the setup and it is now running, here is my FAHLog.txt after starting it up.

Code: Select all

The program will continue in non-service mode now, working in C:\Users\Nathan\FAH SMP.
The next time the computer is starts up, you should see work automatically
continue there. Note that when this service is running, you should not try
to manually run F@H from that directory at the same time.

Yes it is correct but if you are not going to run the GPU client's then you can run just -smp which will default to -smp 12. If you are gaming while folding then the -smp 10 is a better choice any way after you complete your 10 smp WU's and qualify for the bonus points you may want to consider running bigadv but that is a decision to make latter.

How do I run bigadv? I set the small/normal/big setting to Big when configuring my client.

Add the -bigadv flag in extra parameters or in the start string. You must have answered no to advanced methods during configuration.

I am afraid I do not recall that option or at least I don't recall seeing BIGADV specifically. I do know that I was prompted to choose Small, Normal, or Big file-sizes and I did input Big.

The following is from the SMP Install Guide that I followed to the letter...

Code: Select all

Acceptable size of work assignment and work result packets (bigger units
may have large memory demands) -- 'small' is <5MB, 'normal' is <10MB, and
 'big' is >10MB (small/normal/big) [normal]?

This option states a preference for the size of work units downloaded and uploaded to the project servers. Note that all SMP WUs are large in size, so big is the required setting. Bigger units will also have bigger memory requirements. If you run on a slower broadband or dialup internet connection, small is the recommended setting to ease your bandwidth usage and you may want to switch to the CPU client instead.

Change advanced options (yes/no) [no]? yes

If you want to change the advanced options, enter yes. It is not mandatory but is recommended for SMP installs.

 Core Priority (idle/low) [idle]?

This adjusts the FAH client priority level. This is similar to, but not the same as the Windows priority setting. In most cases, the default idle setting is recommended.

Note: For better performance when mixing CPU or SMP clients with GPU clients, raise the priority of the GPU clients by selecting the low priority setting. Do NOT change the Windows priority settings for the client or fahcore.

 CPU usage requested (5-100) [100]?

This will adjust the percentage of CPU usage. The FAH client only uses spare CPU cycles not used by other programs, so reducing this setting is not typically necessary. However, if you want to lower system temperatures, or reserve CPU cycles for more intensive computer tasks, enter a number below 100.In the SMP client, changing this setting does not reduce CPU usage.

Disable highly optimized assembly code (no/yes) [no]?

If you are having issues running the client, disable this. For 99.9% of the users, leave this at the default setting since this reduces the client performance a lot.

Pause if battery power is being used (useful for laptops) (no/yes) [no]?

If you run a laptop, set this to yes to pause if the laptop is not plugged on the wall. This will avoid the client draining the battery.(if name WinSMP*:)In the SMP client, this setting may not behave as expected.(if name WinGPU*:)In the GPU client, this setting may not behave as expected.

Interval, in minutes, between checkpoints (3-30) [15]?

Number of minutes between each checkpoint where the client is writing the client progress to disk in case of unexpected interruption. 15 is the recommended setting.

Memory, in MB, to indicate (1013 available) [1013]?

Sets the amount of memory seen by the work servers. By default, it shows the full system memory amount. Note that reducing this setting does not reserve more memory for other programs. However, reducing this setting will prevent the client from downloading memory intensive work units. A setting too low may prevent the client from getting any new work. (if name WinSMP*:)In the SMP client, .5 GB per CPU core is the minimum, while 1 GB per core is recommended.

Set -advmethods flag always, requesting new advanced
scientific cores and/or work units if available (no/yes) [no]?

This is the same as using the -advmethods command line flag, except -advmethods will not appear on the arguments line in the fahlog. This option states a preference to request late stage beta work units, which may be less stable than regular work units. May cause work unit size and PPD to increase, decrease, or not change.

Ignore any deadline information (mainly useful if
system clock frequently has errors) (no/yes) [no]?

Only set this to yes if your local computer clock is having issues keeping the correct date and time.

 Machine ID (1-16) [1]?

This is the Machine Number of the client. If you are running more than one client under the same operating system, you need to have a different Machine ID for each client on that machine. If you are installing a single client on multiple computers, you do not need to change this since this is only for installing multiple clients on the same computer.

Launch automatically, install as a service in this directory (yes/no) [no]?

If you want the client to run as a service, say yes and it will install a new entry in the services list. The next time you restart the computer, the service will start automatically and run in the background. SMP as a service is only supported in v6.30 and newer.

Note: The current Windows user account must have Administrator privileges to install FAH as a service. And rebooting the computer to start the client running as a service is required.

The following options require you to restart the client before they take effect
Disable CPU affinity lock (no/yes) [no]?

Not useful for SMP since it use all cores.

 Additional client parameters []?

You can enter the client flags here so you don't have to type the flag each time you run the client. We strongly suggest you enter the -smp Do NOT enter -config or -configonly'' or any single-use flag in this field to avoid problems.

IP address to bind core to (for viewer) []?

For future use when the Viewer is working better. Specifies the IP address of the machine of which the viewer should display the client output.
