There's #folding but besides PD187 there's usually nobody there. No oppers.
I'll give #folding@home a shot :)
In the beginning, the Universe was created. This made a lot of people angry, and has been widely regarded as a bad move.

Not trying to be obtuse, but can you do something there that you can not do here?

The information posted here is available to anyone, at any time of the day or night.
Is it the same there?

If you have to ask then you might not fully understand what IRC is....
Forums are more like email and IRC is more like real live conversation.

I think I know what it is.
One downloads and installs a client, (after searching for and finding one),
then one must sign on and have a chat, in real time, with whoever else happens to sign on at that time.

After the chat is over the session is closed, and the information chatted about is no longer available for future referral.
That is supposing that there is even any reliable information to refer to.

I suppose if one kept logs of the session one could refer to them, but no one else would be able to do so.

If information and questions are posted here in this forum, then folks can come here
to find the necessary information and help when ever they wish.

This forum is also the first place that someone would/should think of as a place to come for help or information regarding F@H.

There are a few other dedicated F@H forums out there, but even so,
almost all of their information is derived from this forum or the Folding@home blog.

I'm not saying it is without value, I just wouldn't recommend it for F@H support purposes.

IRC can be beneficial for support needs and and for cheer-leading. Our team has a very active IRC channel and usually has 20 members logged on on any given day with usually at least four or five active at all hours throughout the day. It is mostly used for the competitive antics that F@H offers but occasionally support questions come up and are able to be handled real-time. However, we have a very large and experienced team.

Nobody said it was going to replace anything. It's an addition to other things already in place such as the wiki, blog, forum etc.
If you don't like it, don't use it.
