6055 (Run 0, Clone 34, Gen 74)

Post by Ragnar Dan »

My machine appears to have gotten no bonus points for that WU. My Q8400 @ 3328 MHz restarted itself for some reason and after reloading the data claimed an error and decided to delete the data and start again from 0. So I restarted the machine and downclocked it by 8 MHz, and it finished the WU and submitted it:

As you can see it unfortunately seems to have lost the "-verbosity 9" parameter somewhere (this is using notfred's latest ISO from June 1), so it doesn't report the server nor does it report the "percent of time to deadline remaining", which should have been in the 93-4% range if memory serves.

It appears I got 481 points for the WU, and that's all.

Does it show that "Passkey Detected" message earlier in the log file?
How to provide enough information to get helpful support

Well, that I can't find any more, since every time I restart the machine every old FAHlog file is lost. But the client.cfg has the passkey in there, and it's the same one which was being backed up every 5 minutes to the flash drive since I began running A3 WU's, and it's in the ISO which the machine is booting from, too. And that was copied and pasted directly from a text file when I generated the ISO. Which is to say, it should be valid.

Edit: Hm. I just restarted that machine because it was making no progress, and it appears that when it started folding again, it didn't look for the passkey:

It's a shame, because that machine had been my most reliable SMP folder. It did something like ~70 WU's without a problem since my last power outage.

I can confirm that you didn't get bonus point for this WU :

Also, you can lose the -local and -forceasm switches. Those are hard coded in to the SMP client.

Thanks. Shouldn't I have gotten bonus points? Seems so.

As for the client's calling parameters, I think the -local switch is part of what notfred's automatically does, but I can modify it since I'm doing so for the verbosity switch. And while I'm thinking about it, is -advmethods also automatically in there? It doesn't seem to make any difference from what I can tell.

Back to that system: after it finished the WU it apparently did the same one all over again, but then its FAHlog shows the "Passkey found" line in it on its way to downloading a new WU, so I think that's solved, though I'm not sure everything is working right right when the client has to be restarted in the middle of a WU. Now if only I can figure out why that machine won't OC as much as it used to... it's only been running for 3.5 months so it shuoldn't be clogged with dust or anything. That machine was closing on producing near 6000 ppd for me until it had to be slowed down 248 MHz.

No, -adv is not hardcoded, but can be set in the client.cfg setup in addition to the flag.

Well, this is really strange. It seems you've completed the WU twice, once for bonus points and once for no bonus. I've never seen that situation before. Depending on how and when the WUs were assigned and were returned, almost anything can happen. With conventional WUs, it's not uncommon to see the second copy receive zero points. On other occasions, a WU that has been reassigned from somebody else's EUE can get full credit.

Did you restart the client during this sequence? Do you have FAHlog showing the downloads and uploads for both copies? Did you change passkeys at any point?

I did restart it a number of times while I was trying to get the machine to run reliably. I don't have a FAHlog showing relevant downloads and uploads except those above, and didn't change the passkey at all, ever.

This started when I was at work nearby the quad machine and heard the beep of a PC system restart and went looking for it. When it restarted itself, that was the first time it began running the latest notfred ISO, which I had put in its DVD tray on June 1st or 2nd but hadn't booted from yet. The reason I don't have the FAHlog showing downloads and uploads for both copies other than what I already showed above is because once it started giving me trouble I had to reboot it several times before I got it slowed down to the speed where it would run reliably for an extended period. When I first slowed it down a bit, it worked a few frames and then seemed to stop folding and freeze up, but actually it appears to have been working extremely slowly. I assumed it had crashed or was at best giving invalid results, though I got no error messages and the OS kept going along and the background folding directory backup script kept working fine, which is different from how it behaved before when overclocked too far. So I'd reboot the machine, slow down the FSB, and see what happened. I last did that sometime on the 8th (June 9 ~2:30 UTC), and it's been working continuously since.

Unfortunately the FAHlog isn't saved between reboots, only the contents of the queue.dat, machinedependent.dat, and maybe unitinfo.txt, and whatever's in the work directory, and the client.cfg is generated by the init script. I suppose I could make a link to the FAHlog file from inside the work directory so that would save it, but I can't recall how large a FAHlog file gets so I'd have to kill the fah6 process every once in a great while as it grew enough to fill the flash drive. Checking a file I generate on a Linux SMP + Wine->GPU folding system with disk drives (the invoking line is "nice ./fah6 -smp 2 >> folding.log 2>& 1&"), it appears it would take more than 4000 months to make something ~2.5 GB, so I think I'd be safe in doing the link.

Anyway, only after it had gotten partway finished did I realize it was the same WU as the prior one, and I think by then I'd probably already restarted it so I couldn't see whether it had downloaded it or if it had somehow just started again after a failure of some kind. But I tend to think it downloaded something, at least, because I was still looking through the FAHlog files at the time searching for error messages and would have noticed that sort of thing.

Is there any other way to distinguish the WU besides the Project, Run, Clone and Generation numbers? Otherwise it seems the system might need a bug fix, or maybe for some reason I got someone else's EUE re-run like you suggest. The one you show as being added to the stats DB at 2010-06-09 06:05:53 looks to be the one that uploaded at 12:07:59 UTC according to my FAHlog file. It downloaded and completed other WU's since then, and is presently working on its 6th.
