Re: Project 6318: Collection server misconfigured?

Post by k1wi »

Hi Guys,

I've just started a competition to encourage my members of my site to contribute to my team, and I've just recently had a large number of them complain that their not getting work units returned (and thus aren't yet qualifying for the competition ;) )

I've so far gotten logs from a couple of them and I'll post them below:

Post by 7im »

The first log shows a completion...

Code: Select all

Thank you for your contribution to Folding@Home.
+ Starting local stats count at 1
Successfully sent unit 01 to Collection server.
Same for the second log sample...

Code: Select all

Thank you for your contribution to Folding@Home.
+ Number of Units Completed: 3

Successfully sent unit 03 to Collection server.
However, because these work units went to the backup collection server, and not the original work server, the points will take a little longer to register in the project stats.

7im wrote:The -send command is redundant. By default, the fah client attempts to "send all" EVERY time the client is started. There is no need to use that switch to send all completed work units. Stopping and restarting the client does the same thing. Sorry, can't help much with the rest.

No, you are not correct. The client did not die, it shut down.

Whenever you use the -send * command, you are asking the client to send the specified data and then to shut down without doing any work on another WU. As 7im has said, whenever you restart without the -send command, the client performs the exact same upload attempts as if you had specified -send all except that it does continue to work on other WUs.

When the "client dies" it has checked the queue, decided that nothing is there to upload, and proceeds to the next step which is to shut down. That happens very quickly, but there's information in FAHlog.txt saying that it did exactly what you wanted it to do.

First, run with -queueinfo. The client will print the stats of the queue entries into FahLog.txt and quit. I think you'll find that the queue is empty. Second, look inside of /work for any file called wuresults_#0.dat. If none are present, there is nothing you can do. If one or more are present, open the CMD window, change directory to the FAH directory and run qfix. Carefully note what the output says. We should be able to help you decipher that output.

So the work units/points will take a bit longer to show up because they have been sent to a backup server....

How long is a little while? I have some users who haven't received their points after 72+ hours, they've even folded a further 6138 work unit which also hasn't shown up.From what I can see, no proj 6138 points have been awarded/listed as received.

As these work units are their first ever, the users are a bit out that they're not even on the site yet! (Also the least likely to realise there is a problem).

That may or may not apply in this case. It seems that the stats server did not update at the expected times during the last 14 hours or so. See viewtopic.php?f=18&t=13186 (But that doesn't explain 72+ hours)

It looks like that 72 hour ago work unit's turned up in the latest update (hopefully) they have a couple other work units that have completed apparently, but at least one got through.

Another user still hasn't had their workunits recorded in the stats, I've parsed their logfile, but the first code shows their user info is set up properly, and the second show when the work unit got updated:

Bruce,
What prompted my "client died" comment was the message from Windows Vista stating "Folding@Home has stopped working." That seemed like Windows was identifying an abnormal program termination, which is why I thought that the client died. It would then be my guess that the client sets an exit code that Windows Vista misinterprets as an abnormal termination, but this is relatively unimportant to the discussion. I will definitely try what you have posted, then report back. Many thanks...

Windows does not expect a service to stop. Like I said earlier, if you plan to stop/start the client (including setting the -send xxx option) Microsoft will treat it as an error. and usually it will issue a message and then automatically restart the service. Repeatedly restarting FAH with the -send all parameters means you've semi-intentionally set up a looping condition containing what Microsoft believes is an error.

The -send * option, the -oneunit option, the -configonly option, and several other options are intended for the interactive client and should not be used when running as a service.

Thanks for that, Bruce. It makes sense. :egeek:

I tried running with -queueinfo as the only additional parameter, but once again, Windows gave me that "Folding@Home has stopped working" nonsense without allowing FAH to do what you asked. However, there is a viable "Plan B": Right-click on the Folding@Home icon in the systray, then click on Status, then click on Queue Info. In the dialog box that opens, click the button that says Copy to log. The entire queue is immediately copied into the logfile. Here are the results:

As you previously requested, I've run qfix.exe (actually, I ran qfix-native.exe, since qfix.exe wouldn't run due to "unknown queue.dat version" :? ), redirecting the output into a text file onto my desktop. See the contents of that text file in the code block below. I'm just a novice at this, but it appears that the wuresults files for queue slots 07 and 08 somehow contain corrupted project numbers. I'll watch for your evaluation. :)

If you are running FAH as a service there will be no icon in systray. If you do have an incon in systray you should NOT be running as a service. Running two copies simultaneously is a recipe for disaster.

Hey Guys,

One of my users, who managed to get their first 6318 WU sent to Stanford on [January 29 11:47:55 UTC] (see user1's code in my post at the top of page3 of this thread), still hasn't received any points for any of the 6318 projects they have completed. They have just received points for a single 755 point work unit. Their User ID is 3EBF67E6206A17C6 (from their logs) EDIT BY MOD: and their User Name is TheFranswer

It seems to me that there are a lot of 3618 projects that are outstanding, possibly all of them, as I have a lot of new folders that are still wondering when their points will turn up and they all seem to have been folding 3618 projects.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm flogging a dead horse.

k1wi

edit: I turned 6318 into 3618 then.

At one time, I could have answered your question, but due to the overload on the stats server, that capabilty has been suspended, together with the other features that were temporarily disabled. Now I can only see the most recent credit from each of your clients. The most recent credit from TheFranswer doesn't happen to be a 3618 (and I don't see any in your most recent list, either).

I'm not aware of a problem with that specific project, but that doesn't mean much. I don't know which server that project originates from but since none of the 261x projects appear in psummary, there's a pretty good chance that server is off-line. I'll see if I can learn any more about what might be happening.

Thanks for your help Bruce,

Here are the three most recent work units in order as they appear in my FAHlog for this computer (my old PentiumM 1.83!), maybe you can tell which one it is by the time of WU return and WU project. As you can see the first one is not a 6318 project, but the next two are.

I really appreciate your assistance on this Bruce, normally I wouldn't give two hoots about the points (or even notice if some work units weren't being rewarded) as I have 5 different computers folding, but I don't want my new team mates feeling like they're not wanted by the project.

EDIT: I fold under k1wi for team 171641.

Bruce,
As I said, I'm a novice (...and it clearly shows...). After checking in the Windows Task Manager, I see that Folding@Home runs as a process, and not as a service, so I totally apologize for any confusion I've caused trying to explain my exact circumstances. At least the GOOD news is that I'm running only one copy, and I've been running in this configuration for just over one year without incident (until now).

It appears that Project 6318 has problems with writing the wuresults_0#.dat file. I noticed that several other people were mentioning this specific project, although one of them misidentified it as 3618 instead of 6318. ("Dyslexics of the world, untie!" ). As I included in detail in one of my previous posts, qfix-native.exe identified problems with queue slots 07 and 08 not matching the corresponding work units, and both were for Project 6318. The remaining slots were either empty (slots 00-06) or in progress (slot 09) on a different project.
