Re: please read my logs very slow folding pc

Post by John_Weatherman »

All depends what machine you got. Looks like a CPU around 3 Ghz from the frame times. Give us the info on your machine and somebody will "pass judgement".

The last bit of the log shows an incorrect closedown (or power failure) just reboot correctly to get it going at full speed again. Make sure you see "Extra SSE boost OK" in the log otherwise it will fold very slowly.

You left out one of the most important pieces of data when asking for a performance evaluation and that is the hardware that the folding is being run upon. Different WU's are different sized and thereby can drastically vary how long they take to complete on the same hardware. Also, your machine is not consistently up (which effectively eliminates using the queue data to judge performance) and all your down-time may distort how long you think a specific project takes.

The number of frames (the second number of your 0/500, and 0/2,500) really does not tell anything about how long it will take to complete. If you want a good estimate as to relative performances then the best way is to calculate points per day (PPD) from the amount of time it takes x % to complete.

First, you lookup the amount of points a particular WU is worth at http://fah-web.stanford.edu/psummary.html (this should be proportional to the amount of work needed to finish it). Then look at your log and find out what % (the more % used, the more accurate the final value) was done over how long and then normalize the number to get points per day.

I'll give you an example from your log: Project 6303 (677,1,40).

Looking up the point value for 6303 gives me that it is worth 336 points. Your log states that it started at 68% and stops at 72% and that is 4% done. It took from 17:57:35 till 22:12:26 (or 4 hours, 14 minutes, 51 seconds) to complete that 4% or 254.85 minutes and that corresponds to 63.7125 minutes to complete 1% or 6371.25 minutes to complete 100%. One day is 24hrs which is 24x60=1440 minutes, so it should take 6371.25/1440=4.42 days to complete the WU if you ran continuously and then you would get the 336 points. So you are earning 336 point every 4.42 days (on that specific WU) to get 75.94 points per day. I leave it to you to do the same calculations on your other WU's listed in your log or as an alternative you can install a monitoring program such as FAHMon to automatically do those calculations..

Now I can't tell without knowing your specific hardware if that is relatively normal or slow for your machine. My guess is that you are folding on a 2.8GHz (or lower) P4 which is very low-end hardware for folding now-days. The points system was designed so that a 2.8GHz P4 would get 110 points per day (without using SSE2) but there is enough variation that 76PPD could be in the normal range especially if you are using your machine to do other things at the same time as folding.

I don't want to be presumptuous, but perhaps it would be better if you replaced your machine with something more modern with a folding capable GPU. A modern machine with a moderate folding graphics card can easily do 4000 PPD. It becomes hard to justify folding 24x7 on your old machine, but if you are just using the spare CPU cycles then still everything helps and it costs you very little.

thank you both for your replies , my reply for you both

for john_weatherman , i had to close the pc it frooze , but i do not hit the tower button as i would loose the fold points , turn of the wall plug

what is ( extra sse boost ) and would it help me to fold better

for p5-133xl , the pc is only on for 5/6 hours a day , don't believe in wasting electric

0/500 = 10/20 points per night , 2,500 = 100/120 points per night

pc details below , maybe sent to much , do you see any-thing i could update to fold faster , the pc is 4/5 years of age and working great would add a few things but can't afford to change ( poor pensioner ) :(

SSE basically is a way to speed up processing - see Wiki for details. Without it working, you're back to prehistoric standards. As long as you close down correctly you will not have any problems.
If I were you I would get a 1024 MB RAM stick (the same as you have now in the machine) to boost it up a bit. Move the 256 MB into the empty slot - waste not! It should n't cost much - the postage will probabley cost more! :) Check out Ebay.
If you want to change out the Celeron too, check Ebay. A 2.8 ghz Pentium 4 would speed things up.

These measurments are not points, they're frames, and there's no dependable logic to say whether 10/20 or 100/120 is more productive. Doing a lot of work on a small protein might be either more or less overall than doing a smaller amount of work on a big protein (assuming, of course, that the results are uploaded after they're completed).

Please locate the project number and the time difference for some percentage of that assignment, as P5-133XL has explained above or install FahMon. (Note that every time you restart your computer, you can't see an accurate PPD until you fold for long enough to see the completion of several percent, whether you calculate it by hand or you use FahMon.)
harry48 wrote:another problem just started 10 mins ago , see the error near the end of the log below , did i loose my folding and it says i have 6 wu but i have 7
I don't know.

I notice that you have completed WUs from two different installations. The 6 WUs have been completed by this client and apparently one has been completed by the other one. This is true whether they're two different PCs but it's also true if you reinstalled FAH on the same PC some time back.

Please note that every WU has a deadline. If you fold 25% of the time (6 hours out of 24) with a relatively slow machine, it's possible for your WU to expire before you complete it. You can find the deadlines on the Project Summary (linked at the top of this page, and mentioned above).

If you want to upgrade the Celeron or add more RAM, you'll need to know the Micro Soft International motherboard number. Quickest way is take off the side panel and have a look - should be something like MSI 645, or 845 or even P4MAM. Go to MSI website here! scroll down to Pentium 4 socket 478 list and your motherboard and all the details should be there. While you're looking for the number you can also check the RAM stick details from the one already in your machine.
If you want, you can download a free system info program like PC Wizard and CPUID to get the info instead.
EDIT add - from a quick look on Ebay a 2.8 Ghz Pentium 4 533 bus goes for about $18

When I'm working on an unknown machine, I often go to a website for one of the name-brand memory manufacturers such as this one. They generally have a diagnostic which will attempt to determine how many RAM sockets you have and how many are full. Then they tell you what your upgrade options are. If you know your motherboard information, fine, but their scan program is quit frequently able to determine how many RAM sockets you have and how many are full. Then they tell you what your upgrade options are. (You're under no obligation to order your RAM from them.)

I think you've missed the point. Please re-read viewtopic.php?f=16&t=11962&p=117051#p116704

1) You can't choose which WU are assigned to you.
2) It's not about how fast you finish a lot of short WUs compared to longer WUs, it's about how many points the WU is assigned when it's benchmarked.
3) The 0/2500 is not a good description of the WUs. Please use the project number and the data for that project that you'll find in the Project Summary.

This is the best way to describe what you're working on (for example the one you're working on now is) : Project: 1741 (Run 6, Clone 63, Gen 8). It's printed in the log file every time you start Folding. Each project has lots of work units and each work unit has it's own run, clone and gen number. These are what's needed to check up on.
Unfortunately, as Bruce wrote, we can not get to pick and choose what work comes from Stanford. As your machine will do the work before any deadlines expire, you've no need to panic. Some work units can take a week to do, even with the machine on 24 hours a day, but as they can have a deadline of 40 days that's not a problem.
Just make sure you get the message about SSE working or Assembly optimizations on if available and you'll be ok.
