After Vista reinstall Folding won't Startup with Computer

Post by forked_at_fark »

I recently reinstalled Vista 64.
I cannot get folding to startup with the computer, so I am often forgetting to turn it on.
I have check settings for Comodo Firewall and Avast Antivirus, and see nothing stopping it.
I even have put an icon in my Startup folder.
It just won't start automatically.

I also can't get the 64 bit client working, so tried the 32 bit client.

It's driving me nucking futs.

Any clues how to fix this?

TIA

Try adding run as administrator to the shortcut.

You can not use the official installer to install Deino x86 on an x64 operating system, that's one issue you got now. It would help if you gave us the steps you took to download and install the mpich smp client, so we can figure out where it went wrong ( believe me, it's possible to get it running :) ).

You say,
I cannot get folding to startup with the computer, so I am often forgetting to turn it on.
....
I even have put an icon in my Startup folder.
I wonder what else you treid to get it to run at startup?

Just give us a step by step description what you have done and where the results where diffrent then described in the setup guide and we'll have you folding in no time :)

What is unclear is whether your problem is getting FAH to start automatically after a reboot (i.e.- a shortcut in the startup folder) or whether FAH is unable to run at all (the 64-bit issue).

Can you start FAH manually or not?

After running "install.bat" do you get the two messages saying it's working properly?

First, make sure the client is installed correctly and running well. http://fahwiki.net/index.php/How_do_I_i ... s_Vista%3F

Next, if a shortcut in your startup folder doesn't work, you can always make a scheduled task to run the client.

Thanks for all the answers.
I have tried the various instructions.
Things I was doing wrong before - didn't previously have a windows password.
I do now, and also have it auto-login.
I also now have it set to run as administrator.
When I run install.bat, I get the right responses.
When I try running the client, I get a DOS window flash away too fast to read, but it doesn't start the client, even manually.

My .net version is 3.5
Could that be the problem?

Duhr... I finally ran fah-SMP-592.exe as administrator and ran the configuration.
It is reporting that attempts to get work are failing.
It says that the work unit has an invalid address.

The Vista Event Viewer reports this:

Please read the big NOTE on the download page.

Then download the v6.24 drop in binary to replace the expired v6.23 executable. Don't use the v5.9x versions.

Thanks.
I dropped that in.
That has the same file name as previously, [email protected]

However, I didn't see a replacement for this file.. fah-SMP-592.exe
However, from the log, it seems to be using the most recent beta of the client.
So, I am not sure why the fah file wasn't replaced too.

The file you got is the new client, it both runs single processor as smp wu's. The smp installers are needed to install the MPI libraries the cores use to communicate, if you already have those ( and you do otherwise the client would not run ) you can just drop in the same binary.

I have already jumped through more hoops than a circus animal.
And I still don't understand what I still need to do.
I thought I already dropped in the 6.24 binary.

By the way, my google alert for my user name notified me of your post, and still haven't gotten an email notification from this forum.

If you installed to C:\Program Files, you must turn off UAC for the client to work correctly, as noted in the WIKI. It was strongly recommended to install the SMP client somewhere other than C:\Program Files...

Any AntiVirus software or Firewall software you might have to configure for F@h to get work?

You can test for this case by
(1) Temporarily disconnect from the internet if you wish,
(2) Temporarily disable the AV and firewall programs,
(3) Start fah -smp.

Got it folding again.
Thanks.

Mistakes I had been making... I hadn't seen at first that I wasn't supposed to give it my computer's name, that it does that automatically.
I also didn't let it install to program files this time, but a folder on the root of the OS.
It was still having trouble writing to that folder till I changed that folder's attributes to make it writable.
Also, Windows was trying to block something that I had to unblock.

Thanks again, everyone.

Just some finer points...

Is this line in my log anything to be concerned about?

Code: Select all

Work type 78 not eligible for variable processors
I have a Q6600 Quad processor with 8 gigs of RAM , that is usually not being used that much.

Except for when things were just hung up and running all cores at 100 percent, I not see that they cores are running between 30 and 70 percent.

Also, it would be nice if I could get the console to just hide over in the systray.
