Re: Thoughts on this Folding Rig Config?
Is it still the case that folding on the GPU while also using it to drive the computer's monitor will cause a loss of PPD? I can go get a $10 PCIe video card and stick that in to drive the monitor if it will help the GTX 980 Ti make even more PPD. The rig is built and folding away. And MAN, it is a ...

Re: Thoughts on this Folding Rig Config?
So, funny thing with my build. The E5-2620V3 CPU is going back to Newegg so I can get a bunch of money back. It is being replaced with an E5-2670V3! A friend of mine works (worked?) at a small start-up that went under and they were liquidating assets. He picked up a workstation with 2 of these monst...

Re: Thoughts on this Folding Rig Config?
Thanks. Yes, I suppose that I will need to look at how the GPU cooler is exhausting air and try to work with it rather than against it. I'll try arranging the fans as you have recommended. Unrelated question...the CPU I am using has 6 physical cores and 12 logical ones (hyperthreaded). The folding c...

Re: Thoughts on this Folding Rig Config?
Cool, thanks you all for the input and help. I have made my purchases and am eagerly awaiting the goods so that I can get things rolling. A couple of additional changes/upgrades were made since I forgot that I had an extra ~$500 sitting in my Paypal account (yay for cleaning out the garage and selli...

Re: Thoughts on this Folding Rig Config?
Thank you Bruce, that makes sense. Does the amount of system RAM matter then, if the VRAM fill sup and the WU needs to page stuff into the system RAM? From reading around on here it sounds like the answer is no, but I'd like to make sure that I am setting this thing up properly the first time around...

Re: Thoughts on this Folding Rig Config?
Whoa, forgot about Pascal. While I do want to get up and running well before that drops, I sure wish it was coming sooner! Such is life when it comes to "the next big thing" in PC hardware though.7im wrote:980 now, Pascal GPU later this year.

Re: Thoughts on this Folding Rig Config?
Thanks! Good to know. And agreed on the exhausting setup. It will be important for sure. On stock clocks things may be fine...but it sounds like some GPU overclocking can improve WU throughput so I may play around with that as well. My main beef with the rear-exhausting GPUs has been the noise level...

Re: Thoughts on this Folding Rig Config?
At least based on prices for new stuff, I think that X99 + Haswell Xeon makes sense. Any glaring issues with using this mobo / CPU / RAM? Haswell Xeon E5-2603 v3 (+$70) MSI X99S (+$110) 2x4GB DDR4-2133 (+$15) CPU cooler of some sort to handle 85W (+$60) Total cost increase: $255 So, basically in doi...

Re: Thoughts on this Folding Rig Config?
Thanks! I was just finding that I would need an X-series chipset to realize 40 lanes. X99 boards are a little pricey, and holy moly the LGA2011-V3 CPUs are $$$$! I will look into older server equipment with X79 chipsets since the CPU is largely unimportant. Anyway, should I go with the assumption th...

Re: Thoughts on this Folding Rig Config?
Right, I was debating going with a 980 or 980Ti versus 2 970's. I think that one of those will yield as many PPD as a pair of 970's, and I would then have more slots available for adding more GPUs later on. My limit is about $1500, so I could do a 980Ti and a 970, and then add something else later o...

Thoughts on this Folding Rig Config?
I am looking to start 2016 with a dedicated folding rig. This PC will be used for nothing but folding, so I have no cares about its capabilities beyond stability and folding performance. Here is what I have put together as an initial configuration, and any thoughts/critiques from other folders are w...

Re: Low / Inconsistent PPD with Radeon 7950 & Core 17
So I gave Ubuntu a shot. CPU PPD was up ~25% from 17K to 22K, but GPU performance was cut from the already lousy 26K to 13K PPD. That is with AMD's Linux Catalyst 14.12 driver. I will give a shot to the 14.9 Linux drivers, but I am not super hopeful. Maybe there is just something about the overall s...

Re: Low / Inconsistent PPD with Radeon 7950 & Core 17
PS3EdOlkkola, I did a very thorough GPU driver sweep. I uninstalled all of the AMD software through the uninstall tool, rebooted into safe mode and ran Display Driver Uninstaller (successor to DriverSweeper), ran CCleaner, rebooted normally, installed 14.12 Catalyst fresh, rebooted and fired up fold...

Re: Low / Inconsistent PPD with Radeon 7950 & Core 17
I also have a HD7950 and for P13000 work units it takes some 10min per frame. I dont know if it helps but beside Amd graphics driver are there any drivers missing in Windows device manager? Such as chipset drivers, especially PCI-Express? So, I have not been able to find chipset drivers. The machin...

Re: Low / Inconsistent PPD with Radeon 7950 & Core 17
Good info, thanks. There is a BIOS option to enable the onboard VGA and I would assume that the GPU should also work as long as the PCIe slot it is in is enabled. I'll give it a try, although it sounds like folding performance is not affected if the GPU is used for video output but unused by anythin...
