I'm now pretty sure the crashing is just normal nvidia optimus problems. (happens on my computer all the time) The log file getting replaced with 0x00 bytes is just what windows does when an application crashes the computer. (would send link to a youtube video showing a shortcut that crashes windows...

if this happens to you:
make a backup of your work units before starting folding@home (otherwise it could discard work)
after copying config but before starting folding@home make sure to set the option to autoconfigure gpus in the config to true

these steps should help prevent lost work units.

it happened again, video_tdr_failure or video_tdm_failure don't remember which one.

UPDATE: apparently the config.xml file was full of null bytes, fixed it by copying over the sample config, however i lost a halfway done work unit that i spent about 4 hours of gpu time on . oh well.
