Why Fold? AI solves it.

A month or two ago, in a general conversation with my IT coworkers about distributed computing, I mentioned that I have been folding since 2002 and my reasons for supporting the project. One of them chimed in with [paraphrasing] "Why? Those projects have moved to AI, so there's no need to do th...

Too doggone hot

I built my rig to crunch hard numbers.

However, it is July in Texas an it is too doggone hot to run the client. Can I do something else? Or do I just wait until it cools down a bit?

(I'm a home user, not a data center). Ideas?

Re: Why are you folding?

In 1998 I was able to afford my own PC with my own money. I started using SETI somewhere along the way. In or around 2002, I decided that F@H was a better (more beneficial) setup than SETI, so I began folding. It is now 2022 and I have been folding for about 20 years. It is on a different PC, of cou...

Re: Getting Older

Thanks everyone. I was just idly browsing Ars Technica and Gizmodo reviews of AMD/Radeon gear (I won't touch Intel, but that's for another day) and I always think "well, I could fold more..." Then reality sets in and I remind myself I don't have the money. But still it's nice to dream :-) ...

Re: Getting Older

Well of course. I just meant that I have a habit of going two to three years and suddenly deciding "I should upgrade!". Or I drool over the latest articles over the newest [AMD] whatever and I think "well, my processor is fine, but..." This really was more of an idle question as ...

Getting Older

How does one know if one's hardware for F@H is getting too out-of-date? I currently have an AMD Ryzen 7 and a Radeon RX570 video card, but at what point is that no longer sufficient? Is there a way to tell? I don't want to waste electricity if (for example) there are no work units to process. P.S. Y...

Re: Are We Doing It?

Perhaps the answer wasn't obvious before the slight tangent took over from the grey beards among us... Are the results of our collective folding efforts going to be a part of this first wave of vaccines now going thru final approvals (at least here in the U.S.)? I apologize for the tangent; that di...

Re: It's working

Thanks. I was able to successfully upgrade. Maybe it's just me, but upgrading F@H in the past meant that you might lose your current WU & have to start fresh. There was always a delicate dance of "finish a WU", upgrade, and start anew. "upgrade in place" has never been someth...

It's working

So, if my current client is working fine, do I (or should I) upgrade?

I set up my box with a Win10 admin account, but run daily as a standard user. F@H is working & running just fine.

Re: Are We Doing It?

A folder from 2002! Is there anyone that has been folding for longer than you? I don't know. I was able to afford my own computer (AMD K6-2) with my own money in 1998. I was doing SETI when I discovered F@H somewhere along the way. I joined and never looked back. I figured folding was more importan...

Re: Are We Doing It?

I know. I've been folding since 2002. This is different, so maybe I'm a bit fatigued. Sorry. I'm going to keep folding away.

Are We Doing It?

Are we getting somewhere? I live in Texas so I try to the run the client as much as I can; much longer than normal, but still mostly at night. Even then my room becomes uncomfortably warm. I'm not a scientist, but are we making progress? Everything is set to 100% cause I want to do my bit, but it's ...

Re: New FAHClient

Do you have OpenCL drivers from both Intel and ATI and/or possibly from NV? I've only installed the official drivers currently offered by Gigabyte; I have not installed anything from AMD directly. I may trying seeing if updated AMD drivers would help. I do not have anything by nVidia or Intel insta...

Re: New FAHClient

Bruce, I appreciate your trying to help & I apologize if my tone sounded snarky or rude. Tone is impossible to convey in text. I work 12 hour night shifts and didn't have time to properly follow your instructions. I realize this problem I'm having could be a host of things: I use Private Interne...

Re: New FAHClient

I could be mistaken or the details have gone fuzzy over the years, but I seem to recall that earlier versions of F@H running on Windows XP didn't work correctly without elevated privileges, but all of these things are beside the point. I have been folding since nearly the start of the project's ince...
