Re: Should F@H abandon CPU folding?

Has F@H ever tried to approach gaming platforms to have them displaying ad banners like "When you're not gaming, use your computer to cure Cancer"?

Re: Please allow smaller WUs on FAHClient

With hardware evolving, and proteins getting more and more complex, I don't think that WUs will be decreased in size by much over what's already here. The percentage of large proteins is gradually increasing, but there are still studies needing to be done on smaller proteins. ... if 2 or 3 smaller ...

Re: Please allow smaller WUs on FAHClient

They can decrease the size, yes, but like JimboPalmer wrote, it would add to network bandwidth, and server cost to run smaller units. I would like to see figures that prove these assumptions. Moreover like GPUs, server performance evolve with time. From Wikipedia, on Sorting: "Sorting algorith...

Re: Should F@H abandon CPU folding?

CPU folding may be an entry level for everyone while GPU folding is for more advanced users. Sure. Especially if it is proven that CPU projects work better (ie take less energy to complete) on CPU than on GPU. But if not, 80000 CPUs * 30 W * 24h = 57.6 MWh per day spent to deliver 1% of the total F...

Re: Should F@H abandon CPU folding?

No. Projects which run efficiently with 1 to, say, 16 parallel CPU threads will run extremely inefficiently on GPUs with thousands of shaders. In fact, projects which run efficiently on GPUs with 400 shaders run every inefficiently on a GPU with 4000 shaders (and vice-versa). Does this mean that to...

Should F@H abandon CPU folding?

If I understand well this: https://stats.foldingathome.org/os and conservatively assume that in average a CPU requires 30W of power and a GPU 250W, it looks like CPU folding consumes 25% of total CPU+GPU electricity to provide 1% of total x86 TFlops. This is quite a huge waste of energy! So shouldn'...

Re: Please allow smaller WUs on FAHClient

Each project has a single size, and if you are ever given the opportunity to choose, you will effectively be choosing from different lists of projects. You said that each scientist sets the size of the WUs according to some criteria. This means that the size of the WU can quite freely be chosen. So...

Re: Please allow smaller WUs on FAHClient

There is something I don't get in your explanation. Let's say that instead of issuing one big WU, you issue 10 small WUs which are a tenth of the big WU and which together correspond to the same amount of computation as the big WU. What hinders you to simply adapt the basecredit and the bonus values...

Re: Please allow smaller WUs on FAHClient

BTW, since shorter WUs would mean shorter completion times, this would allow PG to set shorter WU expiry times which would lessen the impact of residual dumping.

Re: Please allow smaller WUs on FAHClient

Yes, WUs can be constructed with durations of small/medium/normal/(any). I'll pass your suggestion on (again) but I'm not too hopeful anything will happen soon -- if at all. Thanks for submitting the issue. Unfortunately me neither I'm not too hopeful... F@H has unfortunately the reputation to not ...

Please allow smaller WUs on FAHClient

Today both CPU and GPU WUs take a lot of time to complete. With summer coming I will need to switch off my folding computers during several months because during the day the temperature is way too high. It would therefore be great to have a --wu-size small/medium/normal option to be able to ask for ...

Re: -65% PPD on projects 11728 & 11730 ???

I am running 7.4.4 under Linux and 418.56 driver. In the logs I see that: 06:06:39:WU01:FS01:0x21:Project: 11730 (Run 4, Clone 428, Gen 159) 06:06:39:WU01:FS01:0x21:Unit: 0x000000bd8ca304e75bcd13d70a03b52a 06:06:39:WU01:FS01:0x21:CPU: 0x00000000000000000000000000000000 06:06:39:WU01:FS01:0x21:Machin...

-65% PPD on projects 11728 & 11730 ???

Hi, I notice a severe drop of the PPD on my 1080Ti these last two days. According to FAHClient the estimated PPD on the current WUs belonging to projects 11728 & 11730 is around 500k while it used to be around 1.3M the days before when WUs from these project didn't come yet. Maybe the base credi...
