Re: New to folding! Hello!

I stand by my original recommendation, posted not too many days ago. Noted. I like your original recommendation. Start cheap, pay your dues, get your bearings with the 750Ti, then purchase a 9x0 if you still feel like it. Adapt as applicable. Expensive hobby, this is, but it sure beats (mini)golf. ...

Re: New to folding! Hello!

Okay, yeah, wow, this is a no brainer... For the SAME PRICE as the 780 Ti, I could get a GTX 980. It would be faster (about a 12% average performance boost from what I'm seeing in benchmarks), use much less power (dropped to a 165W TDP), and runs cooler so I wouldn't have to worry about the heat in ...

Re: New to folding! Hello!

Why not the new GTX 980?
Oh my gosh! I hadn't realized those were out yet! Time to do some research!

Re: New to folding! Hello!

Well, thanks for that input, jrweiss! Also, I just configured a new set of parts: CPU = AMD Athlon 5350 Kabini Quad-Core 2.05GHz Socket AM1 25W ($65) Motherboard = MSI AM1I AM1 Mini ITX ($33) GPU = MSI GTX 780Ti GAMING 3GB ($560) Memory = G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 4GB DDR3 1600 ($40) PSU = Antec Eart...

Re: New to folding! Hello!

Hmmmm... Perhaps it would be wise if I met right in the middle and only used 3 GTX 750 Tis instead? Do you know of any good motherboards with three PCIe slots for that job?

Re: New to folding! Hello!

I see... I would really like to try it as that machine would handle many more slots and pump out way more PPD at a rather marginal price increase (considering). However, I'm afraid to try it as then I'd be out $1,600 =/

Re: New to folding! Hello!

Dunno if 4 x 750 Ti's will work.
Why do you say that? Just because of the heat output? I see people with quad SLI configurations with GTX 780 Tis, how do they keep it cool enough? And I do plan to have a bottom intake fan, probably a Noctua running at 100% all the time.

Re: New to folding! Hello!

Okay, what do you all think about this?: Case = Corsair Obsidian 750D Motherboard = GIGABYTE GA-Z97X-SOC Motherboard link = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813128705 GPUX4 = FOUR EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti Superclocked (does not use 6 pin power connector) PSU = Rosewill TACHYON-550 550W 80...

Re: New to folding! Hello!

Now, from all the 2133Mhz memory I'm seeing, they have higher timings than the 1600Mhz and also most of them operate at 1.6 - 1.65v instead of 1.5v like the 1600Mhz. The higher voltage seems to offset the small gain in stability to me... Also, those timings look crazy, haha! I'm still hoping to get ...

Re: New to folding! Hello!

Ah, I get what you're saying now! Yeah, $5 is not much to spend when it comes to a little extra stability. Also, I'd probably spend a little extra and get the Noctua case fans. What do you think about that CPU cooler for that processor? Also, does anyone else want to share what their ideal folding c...

Re: New to folding! Hello!

For $5, why not get the faster 2133 RAM? If you don't use the XMP setting, it reverts to 1600, but was already certified at the higher performance, so technically should be more reliable. I thought the speed of the memory doesn't really effect folding performance at all? Also, yeah I see what you m...

Re: New to folding! Hello!

I don't think any of the "old timers" are impressed with Windows 8. Stick with Win7 or Linux if there's any way to avoid Win8 except maybe on a cheap smart-phone where it comes pre-installed. Yeah, I hated Windows 8 at first too and stuck to Windows 7 for the longest time. Then, after I e...

Re: New to folding! Hello!

Monitor, KB, and mouse would add some, unless you have a KVM switch setup... A wireless keyboard and mouse combo only costs $10 and I could find a cheapo monitor for around $50 too. Since I wouldn't use these things much except to check up on the Folding@Home application and general maintenance of ...

Re: New to folding! Hello!

Oh yeah, I didn't know the 760 used the older architecture. I was looking into the possibility of two 760s or 750 Tis. From what I know now, two 750 Tis would offer better points per watt value but cost more per CUDA core. The 760s would cost less per CUDA core but have less points per watt. Honestl...

Re: New to folding! Hello!

Posts on the 8 core AMD chips have not showed up here yet, but the adopters of the 6 core versions that came out a while ago posted they were not seeing the throughput they were expecting from 6 physical cores. Thanks for jumping in with your input! I have been doing some research on the "8 co...
