I don't think so, it only patents the genes directly related to that, I'd think that a patent wouldn't cover protein folding at all.

The information we were given several years ago was that SLI/Xfire links are too slow for FAH, though I've never seen an explanation of how moving data via SLI/XFire compares with PCIe data transfers. Latency is a big factor, but it can also be bandwidth. With a slow GPU, the I/O between main RAM and VRAM can be easily be overlapped with computing. With a fast GPU, it's a lot harder to feed it enough data to keep it busy. (That's oversimplified, but still true.) Can the SLI or xFire link be used...

I am wondering how exactly they will define their goal. The human genome project, it seems, had it a bit easier by comparison, since its pretty easy to define how to map a gene. How do you really map a human brain though?

Well, I think there's a distinction to be made here between full TED conferences and TEDx conferences. Full TED conferences are put on by TED themselves, and tend to be much rarer, happen much less often, etc. However, TEDx confrences can be put on by pretty much anyone, anywhere, so it might be goo...

The other issue is people who change names, I know a few teams that have probably 10x as many users as actual folders, and that's not dealing with the people who have stopped folding anymore, or other reasons for the number of computers to drop off.

The real interesting thing here seems to be the use of multiple GPUs. The loss of scaling at four GPUs doesn't sound like that much of a deal, especially since someone with four GPUs could always do two separate calculations using 2 GPUs each if it is more efficient. Computing can be fast, but majority of time is being wasted by sending bits between various chips within the system and outside of it. More improvements are needed for interconnections.
